Shanghai, the practical part 上海

What’s different here, and the few things that quietly cost people a morning.

Getting in

Pudong Airport (PVG)

Maglev to Longyang Road, then Metro Line 2: compare the full hotel route with direct Line 2; maglev single ¥50 (economy).

Metro Line 2 all the way: about ¥7, slow but direct to People’s Square and East Nanjing Road. Mind the walk with luggage from your exit.

Taxi to People’s Square: about 50 minutes, about ¥180. Follow the airport’s current taxi signs to the rank.

Arriving late? A taxi takes you straight to the hotel; the night bus is an alternative with a final hotel leg. Allow for immigration and baggage after landing, and arrange late check-in.

Hongqiao Airport (SHA) / Hongqiao Railway Station

T1 uses Metro Line 10; T2 has Lines 2 and 10; the railway hub also has Line 17. From 8 Oct 2026, T1–Line 10 uses the temporary corridor via Exit 1 on Konggang First Road; the old Exit 3 corridor is closed. Check current signs; the notice gives no end date. Taxi to the centre about 30 minutes, ¥100–150.

Between the two airports

Airport Link Line: about 40 minutes from Pudong T1/T2 station to Hongqiao T2 station, full fare ¥26. Add terminal walks, waiting and flight procedures; T1 needs another connection.

Getting around

Tap an eligible contactless UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, Amex or JCB card at metro gates, with small no-PIN payments enabled. For buses and ferries, use a Shanghai integrated transport code (such as Suishenxing / 随申行) or an accepted prepaid transport card.

Transit QR not working? Every station service centre sells tickets by foreign card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, Diners, Discover).

Metro day passes: 1 day ¥18, 3 days ¥45; Maglev + 1-day Metro ¥55 single / ¥85 return. These cover their named networks, not the Airport Link Line; ordinary Metro passes also exclude the Maglev.

Easy to get wrong

“Hongqiao” is a hub with Airport T1, Airport T2 and a railway station, and the city has several railway stations; drivers and hotels take you to the wrong one.

Save the exact Chinese name on your ticket (上海虹桥站 for trains) and show it, not just “Hongqiao”.

Your bank card works at metro gates but not on buses or ferries.

Use a Shanghai integrated transport code, such as Suishenxing / 随申行, or an accepted prepaid transport card for buses and ferries. Metro gate bank-card entry does not cover them.

Yu Garden

The garden stops admission before the riverfront evening.

Enter before 16:00 and visit the garden first. Ordinary Mondays are closed; public-holiday exceptions use the actual notice.

One outing, with room to enjoy it

Wukang Road and a slow café break

195–270 minutes for the full block

Many lane houses are private homes; enjoy them from the street.

In rain or heat, shorten the exposed walk and take a longer meal break nearby.

Save Xintiandi for another day rather than adding it here.
