Dujiangyan: follow the water from day into evening

Watch an ancient irrigation system still shape a living river, then linger around the bridges as evening arrives.

Getting there and back: Reference private tour 5521920P7 combines Chengdu hotel transfers, the irrigation site, Zhongshuge bookshop and night views. Trip.com 37330600's day-to-night car version lists about 1.5 hours outbound; 5521920P7 does not itemise a one-way duration. The same product returns to your Chengdu hotel. Trip.com 37330600 lists about 1.5 hours back; its page gives conflicting exact hotel-arrival times.

Time and walking: The combined tour takes 6–8 hours and includes Zhongshuge and night views; this is not a duration for the irrigation site alone. The official scenic-area recommendation is about 3 hours for the irrigation site. One visitor spent an afternoon on the full bridge, temple and upper route. There is substantial walking, without a supported kilometre total. Expect suspension bridges, slopes and steps; the upper route is more demanding than the riverside alone. Paid sightseeing vehicles and the Buyunlang escalator are available; an entirely seated visit was not established.

Tickets and timing: Real-name tickets are required. Foreign visitors can use a passport or foreign residence permit via the manual lane, or show ID to buy on site. The official site advises advance booking for holidays to avoid finding no tickets on arrival. January–February: 08:00–17:00. March–December: 08:00–18:00; same-day ticket sales end at 17:30. Adult admission is CNY 80; sightseeing vehicles, Buyunlang escalator and guiding are extra. Heavy rain or summer heat adds to the burden of outdoor walking.

Who it suits: Suits an interest in rivers, bridges and engineering history that a good explanation can bring to life. Less suitable if the engineering story does not interest you or you want almost no walking. Some visitors found the English audio guide poorly triggered or insufficiently explanatory; seeing the river alone does not explain the whole system. Rivers and bridges give visible scale to an ancient irrigation system still in use. Sanxingdui: a day with the bronze masks of ancient Shu: Both are full outings: the Sanxingdui reference tour takes 6 hours, the Dujiangyan day-to-night combination 6–8. The museum involves indoor standing/walking; Dujiangyan has more bridges and slopes. They are not physically equivalent.
