WeChat will not let you pay or transfer to a person
If you are trying to fund a personal transfer with an overseas card linked to Weixin Pay, that card route does not support money transfers or red packets. A merchant purchase is a different transaction.
- Establish whether this is a shop purchase or money you want to send to another person.
- Check which funding method you selected; this restriction concerns overseas cards, not every possible Weixin account balance.
- Show the appropriate Chinese card and agree an alternative with the recipient.
What are you paying for?
- Ask for a merchant purchase-payment route.
A linked overseas card can fund supported purchases, but not the personal-transfer feature.
- If the seller only offers a personal transfer, ask about cash or a supported card terminal.
Do not assume switching to Alipay with the same overseas card enables a personal transfer.
- An overseas card cannot fund this Weixin transfer or a red packet.
- If you are together, ask whether the recipient can accept RMB cash.
Otherwise agree a separate transfer service only after its provider confirms availability, recipient details and fees. No remittance route is specified here.
- Keep the exact error and ask Weixin support to check your account/transaction.
This playbook cannot establish transfer eligibility for another funding source.
If that does not resolve it
- It is a genuine purchase. Ask for the merchant purchase route and confirm the amount before payment.
- No supported merchant route, or it is personal repayment. Offer RMB cash if both sides agree; a supported ATM is a possible way to obtain it.
- Cash is not workable. Agree how and when to settle with the recipient; ask the payment provider to clarify any account-specific restriction before trying another transfer.
