Where should I stay in Beijing for a first visit?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

For a first Beijing visit centred on the Forbidden City and central sights, start with a hotel around Wangfujing or Dongdan. Choose a hutong-area stay for neighbourhood atmosphere only after checking its actual entrance, room and luggage access.

您好,请问车辆可以到酒店门口吗?如果在胡同内,带行李要走多远、有没有台阶?请告知最近方便的地铁出口,谢谢!

Meaning: Can a car reach the entrance, and what is the luggage and metro-exit route through the lanes?

At a glance

  • Wangfujing and Dongdan are the first areas to compare for a central sightseeing base; choose the actual property by the routes below, not by the neighbourhood name alone.
  • The Palace Museum's entry is at the south Meridian Gate, with exits north/east; plan hotel journeys around that visitor direction. [1]
  • Palace tickets release 7 days ahead at 20:00, and Mondays are normally closed except statutory holidays. Put the booked museum day into the hotel-location comparison. [1]
  • Mutianyu's published city-bus pickup choices include Qianmen, Dongzhimen Exit H and Shaoyaoju Exit E. A Great Wall day has its own morning meeting point. [2]

What to do next

  1. Before booking, mark the Palace Museum entrance, any Great Wall pickup and your arrival/departure terminals. Compare Wangfujing or Dongdan for a central base, then consider a hutong-area property if the surrounding streets are an important part of your trip.
  2. Compare three door-to-door routes from each actual hotel: arrival terminal to hotel, hotel to the day's main reservation and hotel to the next departure. Use the correct airport or railway-station name, then inspect the last walk rather than relying on straight-line distances.
  3. Open the specific room and property policies. Confirm foreign-passport acceptance, reception hours, non-smoking status, windows, beds and luggage storage. Ask about the exact entrance and lift route if steps or long corridors would cause difficulty.
  4. Price the room together with the transport you expect to use. Keep the booking cancellable while an essential access or room question is unanswered, and compare the saving with the time and effort of repeated journeys.
  5. After booking, save the Chinese branch name, full address and entrance instructions offline. Send the hotel your actual late or early arrival time and obtain a reply when room access depends on a special arrangement.
  6. If the itinerary changes, recalculate the routes before moving hotels. Count packing, checkout, luggage storage and the interruption to the day; change bases when the new location solves a substantial problem rather than a small map-distance difference.

If your situation is different

You want evening neighbourhood walks: compare a hutong-area stay around the streets you intend to explore, then ask about vehicle access and the last walk with luggage. Preserve the atmosphere you want without assuming every courtyard property has the same comfort or access.

You leave very early: assess a final-night hotel convenient for the actual terminal. Keep the main sightseeing stay central if moving every day would cost more time than it saves.

You travel with older parents: choose a property with a confirmed lift, easy vehicle pickup and useful nearby meals. A picturesque lane is less helpful when every departure requires an awkward walk.

Common mistakes

  • Booking by a central-city label alone: compare the property with your actual morning, evening and departure routes.
  • Assuming the nearest station exit is the easiest one: inspect stairs, crossings and the final approach with bags.
  • Choosing a room from the hotel's headline photograph: check the exact room's window, bed and non-smoking description.
  • Moving for a small nightly saving: count the cost and lost time of changing hotels before replacing a useful base.

Quick questions

Is Qianmen a useful base?

Compare it when your planned walks and a booked Great Wall pickup fit that area. Still inspect the hotel's specific entrance, room and onward transport.

Should I stay beside the Forbidden City?

Choose a hotel that serves the rest of your trip as well. The museum has a directional visitor route, so being near one wall does not mean being near the gate you need.

What should I ask before paying?

Confirm the features that could make the stay unusable for you: guest acceptance, arrival access, room type and any required step-free route. Keep the property's response with the reservation.

How do I compare a cheap outer hotel?

Add the actual journeys you will make each day. Choose it when the route still works comfortably and the saving is worth the extra time to your group.
