Can a carrier-locked phone use a China travel eSIM?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

A carrier-locked phone usually needs its original carrier to unlock it before you can use another provider’s travel eSIM. On iPhone, check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock; No SIM restrictions means it is unlocked.

At a glance

  • Apple says only the current carrier can unlock an iPhone for another carrier; Apple itself cannot perform that unlock. [1]
  • The documented check is Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock, with No SIM restrictions indicating an unlocked phone. [1]
  • The carrier may take a few days to complete an unlock request. Ask for confirmation before buying a non-refundable travel package. [1]
  • A device passcode lock is different from a carrier lock; resetting a forgotten passcode does not answer the carrier-eligibility question. [1]
  • Dual-SIM capability and eSIM hardware support are separate from whether another carrier is permitted on the phone. [2]

What to do next

  1. Before buying the travel eSIM, identify the exact phone model and sales region, then check both eSIM support and carrier-lock status. Save the result and inspect the package's compatibility and refund terms before paying.
  2. On iPhone, open Settings, General and About and read Carrier Lock. If the result is not No SIM restrictions, contact the original carrier with the device and account details through its official support route.
  3. Ask the carrier whether the device qualifies for unlocking, what remains to be completed and when the change will be applied. Keep the case reference and confirmation; a paid device or completed contract should be assessed under that carrier's actual conditions.
  4. After the carrier confirms completion, recheck the status and follow Apple's instructions for activating the new carrier's eSIM. Use a reliable connection and keep the original line available until the new data service is working.
  5. If the carrier cannot unlock the phone before departure, choose a supported alternative: the existing carrier's roaming plan, another unlocked compatible device or an appropriate hotspot arrangement. Compare the full cost and the calls or SMS you still need.
  6. Test the chosen setup before the trip where the plan allows, and save activation and support instructions offline. Do not remove a working eSIM or reset the device simply because a different provider's installation fails.

If your situation is different

The phone has no SIM tray: an eSIM-only design does not remove a carrier lock. Resolve the lock or use a supported roaming/device alternative rather than purchasing several physical SIM products it cannot accept.

The status says No SIM restrictions but installation fails: move to the eSIM provider's compatibility, installation and activation checks. An unlocked result narrows the issue but does not prove the plan was installed correctly.

You use Android: inspect the original carrier's unlock process and the exact manufacturer's model guidance. The iPhone menu path above is not an Android instruction.

The device asks for its screen passcode: distinguish that security prompt from a carrier restriction. Keep the account and device recovery process separate from changing mobile providers.

Common mistakes

  • Buying an eSIM before checking the carrier lock: verify compatibility first.
  • Assuming dual SIM means unlocked: inspect the lock field or carrier confirmation.
  • Expecting Apple or the travel-eSIM seller to override the original carrier: use the authorised unlock route.
  • Factory-resetting a phone without a confirmed need and backup: follow the carrier and manufacturer's specific instructions.

Quick questions

Can an app unlock the phone?

Use the original carrier's official process. Apple's guidance places unlocking with that carrier, so do not buy a travel package on the assumption that installing another app removes the restriction.

How long does unlocking take?

Apple says the carrier may need a few days. Ask the carrier for the actual case status and keep a roaming or device backup if departure is close.

Can I keep my home number after unlocking?

Unlocking allows another carrier; it does not require cancelling the existing line. Configure the lines and their charges for the services you want to retain.

What should I do if the carrier refuses?

Ask which eligibility condition is unmet and compare the supported alternatives for this trip. Keep the phone working instead of spending the arrival day repeating an unsupported activation.
