Should I give my extra night to Chengdu or Chongqing?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 1 oct 2026

Give Chengdu the extra night for a slower food, garden or museum day; give Chongqing the extra night for river geography, hillside districts and a less rushed evening. Choose the city where another night enables a different experience, not merely another hotel check-in.

您好,我们想参观成都博物馆。请问参观路线怎么安排?如果有需要预约或另外付费的项目,麻烦您先说明,谢谢! We would like to visit Chengdu Museum. Please explain the visitor route and any separately reserved or paid activity before we choose.

Bring your actual dates, where you are staying, the available time and the part of this choice that appeals to you. We can keep the useful version around the arrangements you already have.

At a glance

  • Chengdu Museum: City history, puppetry and a useful introduction to the place you are visiting.
  • Sichuan Cuisine Museum: Sichuan food as ingredients, tools and a practical learning experience.
  • Longmenhao Old Street: Historic building forms set against the contemporary river skyline.
  • Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum: River history and a city-wide frame for the scenery outside.

What to do next

  1. Look at what your existing nights already provide. If Chengdu currently has only pandas and a hurried dinner, an extra night can create a whole food-and-culture day: choose a museum or confirmed cooking session, keep a proper meal and leave a park or courtyard pause optional. That supplies a different rhythm rather than simply stretching the original checklist.
  2. If Chongqing currently has only an arrival evening around Hongyadong, another night lets you understand the city in daylight. Use the Three Gorges Museum for context, choose one hillside district such as Longmenhao and make dinner the evening anchor. You can then enjoy the river lights without compressing every crossing into the first night. Protect the onward transfer separately; a train departure and a distant excursion should not compete for the same afternoon.

Compare the actual visits

Chengdu Museum / 成都博物馆 Go inside before collecting another landmark. The permanent history displays connect the Sichuan basin, everyday city life and the objects that made Chengdu a trading and cultural centre. Choose the history galleries and a small selection from the puppetry collection rather than trying to read every case. This works particularly well as a first-day orientation or a rainy afternoon, followed by a meal around your existing base. [1]

Sichuan Cuisine Museum / 成都川菜博物馆 Use the cuisine museum to connect the seasoning jars, kitchen utensils and dishes you have been tasting. The guide describes interactive cooking and ingredient displays: choose it when that context appeals more than a central-city market class. Arrange the specific participatory session in advance, asking what you will make, how instruction works and whether the kitchen can handle your own dietary needs. Keep the exhibit visit useful even if a cooking session is unavailable. [2]

Longmenhao Old Street / 龙门浩老街 Walk Longmenhao’s renovated hillside streets looking for the changing relationship between old brick houses, the bridge and the high-rise city across the river. Pick one café or food stop to make the visit feel like an afternoon, not an obstacle course. If the group is tiring, stay with a shorter level and a clear exit. It pairs naturally with a south-bank evening, while remaining a separate visit from the more intimate Xiahaoli lanes. [3]

Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum / 重庆中国三峡博物馆 Use the Three Gorges Museum to give Chongqing’s river setting a story: landscapes, objects and the changes around the Three Gorges project. Choose the galleries that connect to the journey you are actually taking, especially if you will later cruise the Yangtze. Pair the museum with a brief view of the People’s Auditorium, then stop for a proper meal. It balances the city’s dramatic outdoor scenes with an indoor block. [4]

If your situation is different

A group that values making, tea and comfortable pauses will often get more from a fuller Chengdu stay. A group fascinated by dramatic urban scenery and unusual changes of level may prefer Chongqing. Neither choice requires everyone to like spicy food: a thoughtful meal plan is about the dishes and ingredients that work for the travellers. For a mild Chongqing meal, try douhua fan: soft tofu, rice and a separate dipping sauce. Ask to keep the sauce separate and leave out chilli and Sichuan pepper. If avoiding meat, ask about the broth and cooking fat too; a noodle bowl without a meat topping can still contain lard.

With companions who walk at different speeds, choose the city whose actual next day has the most useful optional branches. A museum plus a meal can be easier to adapt than a long hillside circuit. In bad weather, Chengdu’s focused museums and Chongqing’s river-history museum both offer substance. The decision should follow the experience you would add, then the hotel and train arrangement, rather than a general claim that one city deserves more days.

Common mistakes

  • Using city reputation instead of the itinerary you already have.
  • Splitting one spare night into a rushed extra transfer.
  • Adding a distant day trip because you gained a night, then losing the relaxed local experience that made the extra night valuable.

Quick questions

Which should I choose first?

Give Chengdu the extra night for a slower food, garden or museum day; give Chongqing the extra night for river geography, hillside districts and a less rushed evening. Choose the city where another night enables a different experience, not merely another hotel check-in.

Can I keep every option?

Add another visit only when it supplies a different subject and leaves enough time for the transfer, meals and rest.

What should I reserve?

Reserve the dated admission or hosted activity you choose. Keep optional walks and meals flexible; these separate visits are not one bundled ticket.
