A Chinese app will not accept my overseas number. What can I do?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Use the service’s foreign-visitor, email or staffed route when its online form rejects your overseas number. For maps, keep a working alternative; for a booking, solve the specific booking rather than registering a new Chinese number by default.

您好,网上预约不接受我的境外手机号码。我持外国护照,请问有没有英文预约、邮箱预约或人工窗口购票的方式?谢谢!

Meaning: The form rejects my overseas number. Is there an English, email or staffed booking route for a foreign passport?

At a glance

  • The Palace Museum’s official English site lets foreign visitors book with a passport; entry uses the original booking document at the Meridian Gate manual channel. [1]
  • Beijing’s Summer Palace guidance says its online route requires a mainland number, but offers staff-assisted booking at the entrance using a passport or Foreign Permanent Resident ID. [1]
  • MTR’s English 12306 purchase instructions list email as an accepted passenger contact method. [2]
  • WeChat’s visitor-payment setup accepts an international phone number that can receive SMS verification codes. [3]

What to do next

  1. Before travel, try the actual booking or account you need while you still have time to choose another channel. Confirm that its country-code selector includes your number’s country and that the number entered matches the selected prefix.
  2. Read the error carefully. A missing SMS, an unsupported country code and a form restricted to mainland numbers are different problems. If the form supports your country, correct the format and verify that your home line can receive messages.
  3. Find the provider’s documented foreign-visitor route. For the Palace Museum, open intl.dpm.org.cn in English and book using the passport route. Keep the confirmation and original passport for the visit rather than switching to an unrelated reseller merely to obtain a Chinese-number form.
  4. For the Summer Palace case described in Beijing’s guidance, use the staffed entrance service with the original document when online booking is blocked. Plan enough time for that purchase and confirm the intended entrance before travelling there.
  5. For another provider, contact its official service channel with the exact form and your document type. Ask for email booking, a foreign-visitor page, a counter or another supported purchase route, rather than asking only whether foreigners can use the app.
  6. Obtain a mainland number only when the task still needs one after those alternatives. Choose a genuine line you can receive calls or SMS on, and complete any required setup in your own name.

If your situation is different

Amap registration blocks you but you only need navigation: keep the destination’s Chinese name and full address, use a working map app on your phone, and ask the hotel to confirm the entrance. Separate saving an Amap account from physically reaching the place.

The code never arrives on a supported number: check the registered number, active SIM and carrier’s inbound-SMS service. Use the provider’s support or an official alternative if the verification loop continues, and retain the order reference if you already paid.

A mini-program rejects you after wallet setup: identify the actual service operating that mini-program. Successful WeChat or Alipay registration does not complete every separate service’s booking requirements; ask that service for its own supported route.

You are booking for several people: use their actual passenger or visitor details and agree which accepted contact receives confirmations. Keep the booking references accessible to everyone who needs to enter or travel.

Common mistakes

  • Inventing a Chinese phone number: you may lose access to confirmations, cancellations and calls needed to use the booking.
  • Assuming every app has the same registration rule: handle the specific museum, railway, map or delivery task.
  • Restarting a working wallet account because a mini-program has a different requirement: contact the service responsible for that form.
  • Waiting until the gate to discover the problem: test important reservations before the cancellation or sale deadline.

Quick questions

Should I borrow the hotel’s number?

Ask reception first and agree what it will do with messages or calls. Use the hotel’s help only for a booking it has agreed to assist with.

Is a travel data eSIM enough?

It supplies internet if that is what the plan includes. It does not supply a number for a form that specifically requires one.

What is the best message to support?

Name the service, booking date, passport type and exact rejected field, then ask for the supported foreign-visitor or staffed purchase route.
