Can I use a Chinese physical SIM and a travel eSIM at the same time?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Yes, a compatible unlocked dual-SIM phone can use a Chinese physical SIM for its number and a travel eSIM for data. Label the lines, select the intended data line and turn off unwanted data switching so the phone does not silently use the other plan.

At a glance

  • Apple's dual-SIM guide supports separate voice and data choices on compatible devices, while only one cellular-data network is used at a time. [1]
  • For two different carriers, Apple requires an unlocked iPhone, unless both plans use the same carrier. [1]
  • The data choice is under Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Cellular Data; Allow Cellular Data Switching changes how data can move between lines. [1]
  • The Chinese SIM's registration and number are separate from the travel package: Shanghai's shop guide requires passport-based registration for the physical service. [2]
  • Roaming is a per-line setting. A travel eSIM may require it even while the other line's unwanted data roaming remains disabled. [3]

What to do next

  1. Before buying both services, check the exact device's SIM combinations, lock status and carrier compatibility. Decide why you need the Chinese number and which apps or work tasks the travel-data connection must support.
  2. Register and test the physical SIM, then install the eSIM through its provider's instructions on a reliable connection. Keep the old working setup until both new services can perform their intended tasks.
  3. Give the lines clear names such as China number and Travel data. On iPhone, choose the intended default voice line and select Travel data under Cellular Data, then inspect the data-switching option and disable it if you want data to remain on that plan.
  4. Set roaming separately for each line according to its terms. Keep the travel eSIM's required setting enabled where instructed, and prevent unintended chargeable data on the other line rather than using one global assumption for both.
  5. With Wi-Fi off, test a webpage, an incoming text to the Chinese number and a call where included. Recheck which line supplied the data and whether an active call changes the connection in the way your device and carriers support.
  6. Save the two account details, renewal dates and support routes. Before leaving China, decide whether to close or maintain the mainland number and disable or renew the travel data according to the actual package terms.

If your situation is different

The phone only permits one active line of a particular type: use the combinations supported by that exact model. Do not assume an iPhone feature description applies to every regional model or Android device.

You still need your home-number SMS as well: inspect how many lines can be active simultaneously. Plan which number must remain reachable and avoid disabling the line needed for bank or account verification.

Data pauses during a call: compare the carrier and device's voice/data support and the data-switching setting. Decide whether enabling a supported switch is worth any charge implications before changing it.

The mainland SIM has its own data allowance: choose whether to use it deliberately as a fallback, and document when to switch. A deliberate alternate plan is easier to manage than unexplained automatic usage.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving both lines ambiguously named: label each by its job.
  • Turning on roaming without checking which line is selected: inspect the per-line setting.
  • Assuming a Chinese number changes the eSIM's data route: test the actual selected connection.
  • Removing the physical SIM and assuming its contract ended: complete any required carrier closure.

Quick questions

Can the Chinese number receive texts while the eSIM supplies data?

Use the compatible dual-SIM arrangement and keep the number's line active, then test it. The actual device and carrier combination determines simultaneous behaviour.

Should I enable data switching?

Leave it off when you want to keep usage on one known plan. Enable it only after understanding how the alternate line will be billed and why the switch is useful.

Will both plans be charged?

Each account follows its own package and renewal terms. Selecting one for data does not cancel the other service or prevent charges for its calls and texts.

What is the simplest setup?

Give each line one clear job, test those jobs and keep the relevant settings and top-up details offline. Add a third number only when the device and trip genuinely need it.
