Can I enjoy Erhai by bicycle in half a day from Dali?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 11 oct 2026

Yes: choose a short out-and-back ride on one western-shore section and keep the same pickup or return point. Start near Caicun or Longkan if staying around Dali Old Town; a half-day lake outing is a selected stretch, not a complete circuit of Erhai.

这辆自行车可以进入这段生态廊道吗?在哪里还车?最晚几点还车?费用按什么计算?

Can this bicycle use this corridor section? Where and when must I return it, and how is the charge calculated?

At a glance

  • Caicun (才村) and Longkan (龙龛) are named access points on the western Erhai corridor. [1]
  • The city’s August 2025 notice describes the Yangnanxi–Taoyuan western corridor section as 46 km. That physical extent helps explain why an easy half-day outing should cover only part of it. [1]
  • Dali Old Town and a western Erhai-side stay are separate base choices; identify your starting entrance from the actual hotel rather than the general city name. [2]
  • Our route choice is a pedal bicycle, a modest turnaround point and the same return location. Rental terms, permitted vehicle type and any temporary access restriction must match the signs at your chosen entrance.

How to do it

  1. Choose one shore entrance before leaving the hotel. For an Old Town stay, compare Caicun and Longkan on the map and select the simpler approach. Save that entrance as both the start and finish rather than adding a distant collection of photo stops.
  2. At the rental point, choose a bicycle you can comfortably control. Test the brakes, saddle and steering before paying. Ask for the return location, latest return time, price unit and any deposit terms; photograph or save the agreement so the finish is straightforward.
  3. Read the entrance signs and ask staff which route your chosen bicycle can use. Keep the scenic corridor and surrounding road network separate. Do not follow a motor vehicle onto a road simply because it is going around the same lake.
  4. Set a turnaround based on your available time and energy. Leave part of the half day for getting there, returning the bicycle and a relaxed stop by the water. Ride out slowly enough to notice which places you would enjoy on the way back.
  5. Return to the agreed point, complete the return procedure and confirm that any rental session has ended. Then take the saved ride back to your hotel or Old Town. Keep the rest of the day light enough that the lake outing remains enjoyable rather than becoming the first stage of a long circuit.

If your situation is different

If you do not enjoy cycling, take the same short lake section as a walk. Choose an entrance with a clear ride pickup and give the water time. You do not need a rental vehicle to have a worthwhile Erhai morning.

If staying in Shuanglang, plan from that side of the lake instead of automatically travelling to Caicun. The lake setting is the reason you chose that base; a cross-lake transfer may be unnecessary for a short outing.

If travelling with children or someone with limited stamina, agree on the smallest comfortable section and turn back early. Choose equipment they can use confidently, or walk together. A plan to return to the same entrance lets different energy levels fit one outing.

Common mistakes

  • Calling the whole lake a half-day bicycle ride. Even the described western corridor section is substantial; choose a stretch and a turnaround rather than chasing a circuit.
  • Renting an electric vehicle outside the corridor and assuming it can enter. Ask about that exact vehicle at the actual entrance before hiring it; a rental business is not an access authority.
  • Riding away without confirming where the bicycle must be returned. An out-and-back rental is not automatically a one-way rental; save the return point and terms.
  • Putting a train departure immediately after the ride. Keep time for the approach, rental return and hotel luggage collection, and shorten the ride when the onward journey is fixed.

Quick questions

Where should I start from Old Town?

Compare Caicun and Longkan and choose the simplest hotel-to-entrance route.

Do I need to circle Erhai?

No. A short shore ride with stops gives the lake experience without making distance the main task.

Can I use any rented e-bike inside?

Do not assume so. Ask about the exact vehicle and current entrance rules before renting; a pedal bicycle is our simpler planning choice.

What if it is windy or I feel tired?

Turn back, shorten the outing or walk. Keeping the same start and finish makes the adjustment easy.
