How should I prepare internet for Google, Zoom or work on a laptop?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Arrange the connection for your actual work tools before departure, then test the laptop and hotspot after arrival. Keep a second usable connection for the first important meeting instead of relying on the hotel’s Wi-Fi alone.

您好,我需要参加视频会议。请问房间或大堂哪里有比较稳定的网络和电源?如果酒店网络无法使用,我会用自己的手机热点,谢谢!

Meaning: I need a video meeting. Where is a stable connection and power available? I have my own hotspot as a fallback.

At a glance

  • UK travel advice lists Google, Facebook, YouTube and X among services blocked on mainland internet connections. [1]
  • A travel eSIM, home-carrier roaming and a local carrier plan are different connection choices; Apple instructs travellers to check the purchased plan’s features. [2]
  • On iPhone, choose the intended data line at Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data. A retained home line can still incur its own roaming charges. [2]
  • A plan’s data allowance and hotspot permission are separate purchase checks: choose a plan that explicitly supports the laptop connection you need.

What to do next

  1. Before booking the working day, list the exact services: employer login, email, Google documents, Zoom, Slack, code repositories or another meeting app. Include the employer’s authentication and approved-access requirements, not just the public homepage of each service.
  2. Ask the connection provider about mainland-China use, hotspot support, data allowance and any speed or fair-use condition affecting video calls. Match the plan to your device and itinerary; a cheap phone plan that cannot share data will not solve the laptop task.
  3. Install and update the necessary work apps before travel. Download documents, presentation files and the meeting dial-in or alternative contact details. Complete employer-approved authentication setup while your normal devices and phone number are available.
  4. Prepare a second connection route you can actually activate, such as home-carrier roaming alongside the travel plan. Keep it independent enough to help if the first provider has a problem, and know what enabling it will cost.
  5. After arrival, connect the laptop using the intended route and test a short real call with audio, screen sharing and the files you will use. Also test the employer login; a successful web search does not exercise every part of a meeting or work session.
  6. For the first important meeting, settle into the working location early, connect power and keep the fallback ready. If the primary connection fails, switch before the meeting starts and tell participants the alternative contact route.

If your situation is different

Hotel Wi-Fi works for browsing but not your work service: compare that service on the prepared mobile route. Keep the distinction between a local connection problem and an employer-account problem so you contact the right support team.

The phone works but the laptop does not: inspect hotspot permission, the laptop’s network connection and its own login or security software. Follow the provider’s hotspot instructions rather than buying more phone data immediately.

You have a large upload or long video meeting: estimate the data involved and compare it with the plan’s allowance and speed conditions. Download or send large files ahead of time when possible, leaving the live connection for the parts that need to be live.

Your employer restricts overseas access: resolve that with the employer before travel. Use its approved arrangements and move the deadline or meeting if the necessary access cannot be provided for the trip.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a hotel’s Wi-Fi label confirms access to every work tool: test the named service and authentication route.
  • Buying mobile data without hotspot support: confirm that the laptop can use the plan before paying.
  • Leaving a presentation only in cloud storage: carry an offline copy and a way to share it if the live service fails.
  • Making the first test at the meeting start time: test the complete workflow after arrival and keep time to change routes.

Quick questions

Is a VPN a data plan?

No. Arrange the underlying connection first and follow the service, employer and applicable local requirements for accessing your tools.

Should I use hotel Wi-Fi or mobile data?

Use the route that successfully completes your actual work test, and keep the other supported route ready as a fallback.

What should I ask the provider?

Name mainland China, your laptop hotspot requirement, the apps you need and the expected data use; ask about the plan’s coverage, hotspot and fair-use terms.
