Shuhe, Baisha or Yuhu: where should I go beyond Lijiang’s main old town?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 1 oct 2026

Choose Shuhe for a smaller water-lane and café outing, Baisha for murals and cultural context, and Yuhu for stone-village architecture beneath the mountain. None needs to be sold as completely untouched to make a rewarding half-day.

您好,我们想参观束河古镇。请问参观路线怎么安排?如果有需要预约或另外付费的项目,麻烦您先说明,谢谢! We would like to visit Shuhe Ancient Town. Please explain the visitor route and any separately reserved or paid activity before we choose.

Bring your actual dates, where you are staying, the available time and the part of this choice that appeals to you. We can keep the useful version around the arrangements you already have.

At a glance

  • Shuhe Ancient Town: Water lanes and a smaller old-town outing.
  • Baisha Murals: A compact encounter with regional painting and cultural exchange.
  • Yuhu Village: Stone-village architecture and a mountain backdrop at a smaller scale.
  • Mufu Mansion: A substantial historical interior within the old-town visit.

What to do next

  1. For Shuhe, make a short water-lane walk and one meal the plan. Notice its trading history without expecting modern shops to disappear. For Baisha, put the mural visit first, use a little interpretation and then continue through a modest section of the town. That gives the outing a cultural subject instead of making it another search for photogenic cafés.
  2. For Yuhu, let the stone houses and mountain setting be the main reason to travel. Keep to public lanes, ask before photographing residents and arrange any hosted activity separately. Give cloud and the group’s energy a vote in the walking depth. Mufu can supply a historical interior within Dayan if you want context without another village transfer. Choose the subject, then arrange a simple return and a meal rather than trying to fit all three outlying places into one afternoon.

Compare the actual visits

Shuhe Ancient Town / 束河古镇 Shuhe works best as a slow visit built around water lanes, a bridge and a meal, rather than an attempt to find a wholly untouched alternative to Lijiang. Notice the town’s trade history and contemporary shops together. Let the group choose one café or craft stop, and resist adding every lane to the map. It is a good change of scale when Dayan’s crowds or nightlife have become tiring, without requiring a mountain excursion. [1]

Baisha Murals / 白沙壁画 At the Baisha murals, make close looking and interpretation the main activity. The paintings connect several religious traditions and regional histories, giving a quieter cultural counterpoint to the snow-mountain excursion. Read or hear a brief introduction, then choose a few details rather than treating every wall as a photo background. Continue into Baisha’s streets afterwards, keeping the mural visit and optional shopping as separate choices. [2]

Yuhu Village / 丽江玉湖景区 Visit Yuhu for the contrast between stone houses and the wider mountain setting. Walk a small section of the village slowly, asking before photographing residents or entering working spaces. The history associated with Joseph Rock can add a useful subject for curious travellers, but village scenery is enough to make a modest outing worthwhile. Keep horse or walking products separate until you have selected a real provider and route. [3]

Mufu Mansion / 丽江古城博物院-木府 Use Mufu to understand the historical authorities behind Lijiang’s attractive streets. Follow the sequence of buildings and look at how a large administrative residence differs from the ordinary houses around it. A little interpretation is more valuable than rushing to photograph each roof. Combine it with a nearby old-town lunch and a short lane walk, leaving the longer climb optional if the group wants a view. [4]

If your situation is different

Café and family interests often favour Shuhe’s contained visit. Art and religious-history interests make Baisha’s murals the stronger anchor. Architecture and a landscape backdrop point toward Yuhu, particularly when the group is happy with a modest village outing instead of a big attraction. A rainy day can favour a confirmed heritage interior, while wet public lanes remain an outdoor commitment.

If you have only one spare half-day, repeat a part of the town you like rather than add a second destination merely to increase variety. If two companions have different interests, agree on one village and an optional shop or café branch. A making lesson, horse ride or guided walk should be selected as a real product from a named host; it is not an automatic entitlement attached to the village name.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting every quieter alternative to be deserted.
  • Booking an unspecified “village experience” without knowing its actual activity.
  • Choosing a mountain backdrop alone, then declaring the visit pointless when cloud arrives and the village itself was never part of your interest.

Quick questions

Which should I choose first?

Choose Shuhe for a smaller water-lane and café outing, Baisha for murals and cultural context, and Yuhu for stone-village architecture beneath the mountain. None needs to be sold as completely untouched to make a rewarding half-day.

Can I keep every option?

Add another visit only when it supplies a different subject and leaves enough time for the transfer, meals and rest.

What should I reserve?

Reserve the dated admission or hosted activity you choose. Keep optional walks and meals flexible; these separate visits are not one bundled ticket.
