My travel eSIM is installed but I have no data. What should I check?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Check that the travel line is turned on, selected for mobile data and activated for your current country. Then apply the provider’s roaming settings and reconnect; do not delete the eSIM as your first troubleshooting step.

您好,我的旅行数据卡已安装,但不能上网。请帮我确认启用的线路、移动数据选择和漫游设置;暂时不要删除这张eSIM,谢谢!

Meaning: The travel data plan is installed but has no internet. Please check the active line, data selection and roaming settings without deleting it.

At a glance

  • On iPhone, choose the data line in Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and check Turn On this Line for the intended SIM. [1]
  • Apple’s eSIM troubleshooting includes switching Airplane Mode on and off, checking the cellular line and restarting the device. [2]
  • A phone can be locked to its original carrier; Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should show No SIM Restrictions for another-carrier use. [1]
  • Keeping the home line active does not make it the correct travel-data line, and using it can incur home-carrier roaming charges. [1]

What to do next

  1. Before leaving a reliable connection, save the provider’s activation instructions, plan reference and support contact. Record the intended data line and any required roaming or APN setting so you can compare them when the connection fails.
  2. Check where you are and what the plan covers. Confirm the destination is included, the paid validity period has begun and there is remaining data. A mainland plan may need a separate arrangement for an intermediate country or region.
  3. Open the phone’s cellular settings and enable the travel line. On iPhone, select it under Cellular Data; inspect the line label and number carefully so you do not change the home SIM by mistake.
  4. Apply the travel provider’s data-roaming instruction to that line. If the provider specifies an APN, enter exactly that value using its documented path. Keep the home line’s settings separate from those of the travel plan.
  5. Toggle Airplane Mode to reconnect, then restart if needed and test a simple webpage or map search. Move to a place with a stronger signal if the phone shows poor reception, especially inside a station or basement.
  6. If it still fails, contact the provider with the plan reference, device model, location and screenshots of the relevant line settings. Use your prepared roaming or Wi-Fi fallback for the immediate taxi, hotel or payment task.

If your situation is different

The phone has a signal but one app fails: test another service on the same connection. If other internet tasks work, handle the particular app’s account or access problem rather than reinstalling the eSIM immediately.

The phone works but the laptop hotspot does not: inspect whether the plan permits tethering and follow its hotspot instructions. Check the laptop’s network connection separately from the phone’s mobile-data status.

The eSIM is installed but has never connected: compare the provider’s activation instructions with the current country and device compatibility. Keep the installed profile while support identifies the issue, especially if reinstalling needs a new activation.

Your home line is using data instead: select the travel line explicitly, then inspect any data-switching setting and the carrier’s charges. Verify the active line before running a large update or video call.

Common mistakes

  • Deleting the eSIM before collecting the setup details: retain the profile and order reference while diagnosing the connection.
  • Changing several settings at once: make one documented correction, reconnect and test so you know what worked.
  • Buying more data without checking validity or coverage: establish whether the plan is active in your current location first.
  • Assuming a working signal means every app should work: distinguish general data access from one service’s availability or login problem.

Quick questions

Should I enable data roaming?

Follow the travel plan provider’s instruction for that specific line. Do not apply it blindly to the home line.

What should I send support?

Device model, plan/order reference, current city or airport, line status and the exact failure. Keep full account credentials out of ordinary chat.

Can I use airport Wi-Fi meanwhile?

Use an available trusted connection to retrieve instructions or contact support, and keep the first transport and hotel details available offline.
