Does a short airport transit count as entering China?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 17 oct 2026

A short connection does not automatically mean you are entering mainland China. If you remain inside the port’s restricted transit area, use the airside-transit rules; leaving that area requires an applicable entry permission.

您好,我要转乘这趟国际航班。请问我可以留在国际中转区吗?这条路线是否需要提取行李、办理入境后重新值机?谢谢!

Meaning: I am connecting to this international flight. Can I stay in international transit, or must I collect baggage, enter and check in again?

At a glance

  • NIA’s 24-hour direct-transit policy covers all nationalities with valid international travel documents and confirmed onward transport to a third country or region, while remaining in the port’s restricted area. [1]
  • Leaving that restricted area requires temporary entry permission from the port’s immigration authority. [1]
  • The separate 240-hour scheme covers 57 nationalities, 65 entry ports and designated areas in 24 provincial-level regions. [1]
  • Direct transit within 24 hours without leaving the restricted area is an arrival-card exemption; an ordinary tourist entering visa-free normally completes the card. [2]

What to do next

  1. Read the actual ticket and connection instructions. Identify whether both flights use the same airport and whether the airline expects you to remain in international transit. Ask the airline to confirm baggage handling and any requirement to pass immigration for this itinerary.
  2. If you can remain airside, keep the onward boarding information and valid travel document ready and follow the international transfer signs. Stay within the restricted area rather than walking towards arrivals to look for a hotel or restaurant outside it.
  3. If the itinerary requires leaving the restricted area, establish the entry route before flying. You may qualify for 30-day visa-free entry, 240-hour transit or another permission; otherwise obtain the appropriate visa for the planned journey.
  4. For a city visit during the connection, carry the documents for that entry route and apply at the border inspection point. Include the time needed to leave the airport, reach the city, return and complete departure procedures before deciding how much sightseeing to attempt.
  5. If temporary entry is not granted, keep the onward journey and use an airside plan. Ask the airline or airport transfer desk about the available waiting, food and rest options rather than abandoning the onward flight.
  6. If the flight changes, reconsider the whole connection: duration, airport, baggage and need to enter. A new departure the following day or from another airport can change the documents and arrangements you need.

If your situation is different

You have separate tickets: ask the airlines whether you must collect bags and check in again. If that requires leaving the restricted area, arrange an entry permission that covers the journey. Do this before buying a tight connection.

You connect to a domestic flight: treat the mainland entry procedure as part of the itinerary and establish the applicable visa or exemption. Keep the onward domestic booking separate from the international ticket that may be required for a transit exemption.

You want an airport hotel: identify whether it is airside or landside before reserving. A hotel with airport in its name may still require you to pass immigration. Choose one you can reach under your actual entry arrangements.

You hold a passport eligible for 30-day visa-free entry: use the qualifying entry route if you want to enter for the connection. Keep the passport, accommodation or short-visit plan and onward booking available for inspection.

Your passport is an emergency or temporary document: have the airline and relevant immigration authority assess that exact document and route before departure. The ordinary-passport conditions of the 30-day exemption cannot be assumed to cover a different document.

Common mistakes

  • Equating a short layover with automatic permission to leave: establish the entry route before planning the city visit.
  • Booking a landside hotel while relying only on airside transit: check the hotel’s location relative to immigration.
  • Ignoring baggage collection on separate tickets: confirm the transfer procedure with the carriers for the actual booking.
  • Using the 240-hour scheme’s nationality list to describe all 24-hour airside transit: keep the two policies separate.

Quick questions

Do I need an arrival card if I stay airside?

Direct transit within 24 hours without leaving the restricted area is one of the published exemptions.

Can I decide to visit the city after landing?

Apply for the appropriate entry procedure with the required documents and leave only after permission is granted.

What is the safest fallback for a short connection?

Preserve the onward flight and stay in the transit area if there is too little time or the necessary entry permission is unavailable.
