Should I accept a fixed fare from an airport taxi driver in China?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

For an ordinary airport taxi, use the official queue and confirm the metered journey before setting off. A prebooked fixed-price transfer is a different service: compare it against its written quote, vehicle and inclusions rather than an unexplained price offered in arrivals.

您好,我去这个地址。请按出租车计价器收费,其他费用请出发前说明,到达后请给我发票,谢谢!

Meaning: Please use the taxi meter, explain additional charges before departure and provide a receipt.

At a glance

  • Shanghai's published taxi guide lists a daytime starting fare of RMB 14 for the standard example and RMB 16 for electric vehicles, covering the first 3 km. Read the actual vehicle tariff. [1]
  • The same guide lists RMB 2.7 per kilometre after the initial distance, with additional distance/time conditions; it is not a single flat airport fare. [1]
  • Shanghai's airport guide gives Pudong to People's Square as an illustrative taxi journey of about 50 minutes and RMB 180. The route, traffic and applicable tariff determine the actual trip. [2]
  • A taxi receipt records the vehicle/driver and journey details, including distance and waiting time, and Shanghai taxis accept RMB cash. [1]

What to do next

  1. Before landing, save the hotel's exact Chinese address and compare the official taxi route with a prebooked transfer. If choosing a transfer, obtain the total, vehicle, waiting, toll and parking arrangement in writing so the service is identifiable on arrival.
  2. For an ordinary taxi, follow the airport's official queue signs and show the destination before loading bags. Confirm that the driver will use the meter and explain any separately applicable toll or charge.
  3. If someone approaches you with an unexplained fixed fare, identify the service and its terms before accepting. When you want a normal taxi, remain in the official queue and ask staff for help rather than negotiating under pressure in the arrivals hall.
  4. Once seated, check that the journey and meter start as agreed. Keep the destination visible and use the saved address to resolve a wrong branch or map pin early, while a safe stop is still easy.
  5. At arrival, review the meter, applicable extras and receipt before payment. Keep the receipt and any original quote or app order so an unexpected charge can be traced to the actual ride.
  6. If a disagreement develops, prioritise a safe staffed place and use the taxi operator, airport service desk or booking support with the ride details. Resolve a fare query through the record rather than escalating a confrontation in the vehicle.

If your situation is different

You booked a fixed-price airport transfer: compare the requested amount with the written inclusions and any agreed delay or overtime term. A legitimate fixed quote can be useful; the issue is whether the actual service and extras were agreed.

You booked through a ride-hailing app: use the order's fare type and support record. Do not assume a taxi meter and an app's fixed or estimated fare have identical charging rules.

You arrive late: read the vehicle's applicable night tariff and include the actual route and waiting. The daytime Shanghai example above is not the price for every night journey.

You have large bags or a group: choose a vehicle that fits before departure and compare the full transfer quote. An unsuitable cheap ride creates another problem even if its meter works correctly.

Common mistakes

  • Treating every fixed-price service as the same: distinguish a confirmed transfer from an unsolicited price.
  • Using a published downtown example as the exact fare to any hotel: compare the actual destination and tariff.
  • Leaving without a receipt: keep the record needed to query the ride.
  • Arguing over price while feeling unsafe: reach a suitable public place and use formal support.

Quick questions

Would you accept a prebooked fixed-price transfer?

Yes, when the provider, vehicle, meeting point, waiting and total are clear and fit the trip. Compare the final service rather than only the headline price.

What if the driver refuses the meter before departure?

Ask queue staff for assistance and choose a taxi following the agreed metered arrangement before starting the ride.

Does the Shanghai fare apply elsewhere?

No. Use the local tariff and actual vehicle; the numbers here are scoped to the published Shanghai guide.

What should I keep for a complaint?

Receipt or app order, vehicle details, time, route, the quoted or metered amount and the specific extra charge disputed.
