Do I need both Alipay and WeChat Pay in China in 2026?
By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026You can travel with one working wallet, but prepare both Alipay and WeChat Pay if you can. Keep a physical bank card and some RMB cash for a phone, card or checkout problem.
您好,请问可以用支付宝或微信支付吗?如果我的外卡付不了,可以刷银行卡或付人民币现金吗?谢谢!
Meaning: Do you accept Alipay or WeChat Pay? If my foreign card does not work in the app, may I pay by bank card or RMB cash?
At a glance
- Alipay’s visitor setup is download/register, then Add Now to link an eligible card; an overseas phone number can be used with the correct country code. [1] [3]
- Tencent lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Discover Global Network including Diners Club, and UnionPay for Weixin Pay. [2]
- A Chinese bank account is not a prerequisite for the linked international-card purchase route described by either provider. [1] [2]
- Alipay English help: +86 571 2688 6000. Weixin Pay English help: +86 571 95017, or 95017 from a Chinese number. [1] [3]
What to do next
- Before departure, start with Alipay if you have neither wallet, because its published visitor instructions give a short registration and Add Now path. If WeChat Pay already works for you, keep that progress: keep it as your main route.
- In Alipay, register using your phone number and country code, then tap Add Now and follow the card and identity prompts. Prepare the phone number that receives your account or issuer messages. The guide lists international debit as well as credit cards; a debit card is not automatically disqualified.
- For the second route, install WeChat and register using your international phone number. The official payment guide shows Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards → Add Bank Card. Enter the card details and follow the prompts, including any identity checks presented. If labels differ, find Wallet and Bank Cards inside Services.
- Learn the checkout controls now. Alipay uses Scan or Pay/Receive. The payment guide shows WeChat’s top-right +, then Scan for the merchant’s code or Money to show your payment code. Use these for merchant purchases. Do not practise by transferring to a friend.
- After landing, make a small genuine purchase at a staffed merchant where cash is an alternative. Confirm which wallet and card completed it. Keep your physical card separately from the phone and carry small RMB notes for the next essential purchase; do not rely on a second icon to cover a dead battery.
If your situation is different
Only WeChat Pay is ready: use it. Tencent documents merchant payments across shops, dining and transport. Arrange your arrival ride and accommodation payment ahead of time and retain cash/card fallback; you do not need to postpone the trip solely because Alipay remains unresolved.
Only Alipay is ready: the same approach applies. Its published visitor service covers mainland purchases and travel services. Add WeChat when convenient, but keep the working account as your main route. Having two unfinished accounts helps less than understanding one completed setup.
Both wallets use the same card: that gives a second wallet route, not a second issuer. Add a card from another issuer if you already own one and both services accept it; otherwise make the fallback cash or another payment method you can actually use.
You need to reimburse a friend: that is not the same job as paying a shop. Alipay explicitly excludes person-to-person transfers and red packets funded by international cards. Ask to split the merchant bill at source or settle with cash; do not assume installing another wallet creates transfer capability.
You are travelling with someone who does not use a smartphone: agree how shared purchases will be paid and give each person cash and the accommodation address. Do not make the whole group’s ability to eat or get home depend on one phone remaining charged and connected.
Common mistakes
- Counting app installation as payment readiness: registration, card setup, any requested checks and a completed merchant transaction are different milestones.
- Assuming two wallets eliminate every failure: they may share the same phone, card and connection. Prepare a fallback that still works when one of those fails.
- Reading “no extra Alipay+ fees” as “my Alipay foreign card is free”: Alipay+ partner-wallet terms and Alipay’s international-card route are different. Read your checkout and issuer terms.
- Expecting every merchant to accept a physical foreign card: the official payment guide tells visitors to look for the card-network logo or ask the cashier. Carry cash as well.
Quick questions
Do I need a Chinese phone number?
The cited visitor setup supports registration with an international number.
Can I use a debit card?
Alipay and Tencent describe eligible international debit and credit cards. The supported network and your specific card’s acceptance still matter.
Will I pay the same fees in both apps?
Compare the actual checkout and your issuer’s foreign-currency terms before approving the purchase.
What if my phone stops working?
Use the physical card where its network is accepted, or cash. The official guide also describes RMB withdrawals from ATMs that accept your international card. Keep some cash ready before your phone stops working.
