Should I choose RMB or my home currency at an ATM in China?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Choose RMB/CNY and decline the ATM’s optional currency conversion in the usual case. That leaves conversion to your card provider; still review the ATM access fee and your own card’s withdrawal charges before accepting.

您好,我希望按人民币金额付款或取款,不选择机器提供的外币转换。请先显示人民币金额和单独手续费,谢谢!

Meaning: Please show the RMB amount and separate fees without the machine's optional foreign-currency conversion.

At a glance

  • Wise's card guidance recommends choosing the local currency and declining an ATM's offered conversion; in mainland China, the local currency choice is RMB/CNY. [1]
  • For Wise, ATM fees and allowances depend on where the card was issued, usually the registered account address. [1]
  • The documented Wise path is Cards → Your spending limits → View ATM fees, with daily/monthly limits shown in the account-limits section. [1]
  • Wise distinguishes its own withdrawal/conversion charges from a separate ATM-operator fee, which is normally shown before approval. [1]

What to do next

  1. Before withdrawing, open your card provider's current cash-withdrawal limits, fees and exchange arrangements. If using Wise, inspect Cards, Your spending limits and View ATM fees for your own issued-card region rather than copying another traveller's allowance.
  2. Choose a suitable ATM using your card network's official locator and inspect the machine's displayed network support. Enter the amount of RMB you actually need, allowing for the provider's limits and the ATM's transaction limit.
  3. Read the currency screen carefully. Select RMB or CNY, or the option declining the ATM's conversion, when it offers to debit your home currency at its own rate. Keep the withdrawal itself separate from the optional conversion choice.
  4. Review any ATM access fee and the final amount before confirming. If the screen is unclear or the proposed cost is unacceptable, cancel before approval and choose another machine rather than guessing which button accepts the conversion.
  5. Collect the cash, card and receipt and inspect the account record. Compare the posted amount with the withdrawal and fee information after processing, keeping the receipt if you need to query an unexpected charge.
  6. Use merchant payments for spending where convenient and keep cash for the places where it helps. Avoid repeated small withdrawals solely because they feel safer without first understanding any per-withdrawal fee in your card's terms.

If your situation is different

The ATM says its conversion gives certainty: compare the quoted home-currency total and markup with your card's actual terms. The convenience of seeing a familiar currency is a separate benefit from the exchange cost.

You already hold CNY in a supported account: use the provider's guidance for how that balance is spent and still avoid an unnecessary ATM conversion. Do not assume every account supports the same currency balance or withdrawal path.

The machine charges an access fee: declining conversion does not remove that separate fee. Decide whether to accept it or use another ATM before completing the transaction.

You use a credit card: inspect the issuer's cash-advance terms, interest and fees before withdrawing. A favourable currency choice does not cancel charges associated with taking cash on credit.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing home currency only because it looks familiar: inspect the offered exchange rate and choose the appropriate conversion route.
  • Assuming decline conversion means cancel withdrawal: read the two choices and confirm which one retains the local-currency withdrawal.
  • Treating one provider's free allowance as universal: use your own card's region and account terms.
  • Ignoring a separate ATM fee: review the final charge even after declining conversion.

Quick questions

Does choosing CNY make the withdrawal free?

No. Your card's withdrawal and conversion fees and any ATM access fee can still apply.

Is this only relevant to Wise?

The page's exact menu and allowance description are Wise-specific. With another issuer, inspect its terms and compare the offered ATM conversion with the issuer's conversion route.

What if I cannot identify the right button?

Cancel before approval and use a clearer machine or ask your issuer about the screen. Do not approve an unfamiliar home-currency total merely to finish quickly.

Can the same issue appear at a card terminal?

If a merchant offers home-currency conversion, ask to see the local-currency amount and any conversion terms before approving. Use the issuer's guidance for your card.
