I may have paid twice. How do I check?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Compare the wallet’s transaction records with the merchant’s receipts before paying again. If two payments completed for one purchase, ask the merchant to refund the duplicate through its original transaction.

您好,我怀疑同一笔订单付了两次。麻烦您核对这两个付款记录。如果确实重复收款,请通过原订单退还重复的一笔,并给我退款凭证。谢谢!

Meaning: I may have paid twice for one order. Please compare these records and refund any duplicate through the original order, with a refund receipt.

At a glance

  • A completed duplicate charge needs a refund; a pending entry may instead be released or reversed. As a product-specific example, Alipay’s older international-credit-card help gives a 7-working-day refund reference for refunds made within 30 days of the original payment. [4]
  • For a pending hold, use your own issuer’s release deadline. As one issuer example, Wise says ordinary pending holds usually release after 7 days, while some deposits, rentals and ATM holds can take up to 30 days. [3]
  • Open the original wallet order and save its refund status, expected arrival date and refund reference. Alipay’s cited page concerns its international-credit-card product; use the estimate shown for your actual transaction and the issuer’s posting rules when following up.
  • Start the refund clock when the merchant sends the money, not when you first ask for it. With a different issuer, follow that issuer’s own refund and hold rules; do not apply the Wise example as a general card deadline.

What to do next

  1. Before retrying any slow or failed payment, ask the cashier to check receipt so you do not create a duplicate. If you may already have paid twice, stay with the merchant long enough to establish what happened. Open the wallet’s records for the purchase and compare the amount, time, recipient and status of each attempt. Ask the cashier to check their own receipt list, not just the sound or message they remember hearing.
  2. List the payment methods used. For example, you may have tried Alipay first, then WeChat, then paid cash. Keep the receipt for the method the merchant accepted and note any earlier attempt that is still unresolved.
  3. Match each bank entry to a wallet transaction. Record the card’s last four digits and distinguish an entry labelled pending from one shown as completed or posted. Ask the issuer to explain an unclear bank status using the transaction reference and amount.
  4. If the merchant confirms two completed payments for the same order, identify the duplicate together and request its refund. Ask for the refund through that original order, and keep the refund reference or receipt alongside the purchase record.
  5. If the merchant sees only one completed payment, ask the wallet and issuer to trace the other attempt. Give them the amount, time and merchant details. Ask whether the unresolved entry is pending, completed, reversed or already refunded, and what their next follow-up date is.
  6. Check the original payment route for the refund rather than expecting cash from an unrelated person. If the promised follow-up date passes without resolution, contact the provider again with the same case and refund references; avoid starting a fresh story each time.

If your situation is different

The phone showed an error but the cashier received payment: keep the merchant’s receipt and ask the wallet to reconcile its display. Do not make a second payment simply to turn your screen green.

You paid cash after a digital attempt: retain the cash receipt and explain that sequence to the merchant. If the digital attempt also completed, the merchant can identify which payment to refund against the original purchase.

Two transactions have different converted amounts: first compare their RMB purchase amounts, merchant and timestamps. The bank statement may express the card transaction in another currency. Ask the issuer to account for any remaining difference when tracing the entries.

You have left the shop: contact its official booking or customer-service channel with the receipt. Include enough transaction detail for staff to find the order, while keeping full card numbers and login codes out of ordinary chat messages.

Common mistakes

  • Counting every notification as a separate completed payment: match notifications to the wallet and merchant records first.
  • Deleting a transaction screenshot once a refund is promised: keep the original purchase and refund references until the case is closed.
  • Accepting a request to send more money to release a refund: return to the original merchant or payment provider’s official support route.
  • Arguing about a bank’s converted amount before matching the original purchase: establish the merchant, RMB amount and transaction references first.

Quick questions

Should I pay again while a transaction is pending?

Ask the merchant to establish receipt first. Agree an alternative only once you know which purchase still needs to be paid.

Who should I contact first?

Start with the merchant for its receipt count, then the wallet or issuer for the unresolved transaction’s status.

How long does a refund take?

Alipay’s older international-credit-card product gives a 7-working-day example for refunds within 30 days of payment. Use the actual order’s expected arrival and your issuer’s posting rules. As an issuer example, Wise quotes 5–10 working days after the merchant sends a completed refund; another bank may set a different period. Obtain proof of refund before escalating.
