Can I bring a bicycle on a Chinese train?
By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026A full-size bicycle usually will not fit Chinese high-speed-train luggage limits; ship it separately or rent at your destination. A compact folding or dismantled bicycle is only a workable carry-on when its packed dimensions, weight and contents meet the rules for your train.
这是包装好的自行车,长宽高是___×___×___厘米,重___公斤。请问符合这趟车的携带规定吗?
This is a packed bicycle. Its dimensions are ___ × ___ × ___ cm and its weight is ___ kg. Can it travel on this service?
At a glance
- For China Railway EMU services, each carried item’s length + width + height must be no more than 130 cm. Ordinary non-EMU services allow a 160 cm total for normal luggage; use the actual packed measurements. [1]
- The standard free allowance is 20 kg per adult and 10 kg per child; each individual item must weigh no more than 20 kg under the domestic transport rules. Your bike and other luggage share the allowance. [1]
- The domestic rules require hard packaging for wheeled mobility devices such as balance boards and scooters. The separate Hong Kong cross-boundary rules expressly require a bicycle to be fully protected by a carton or other hard packaging. [1]
- For Hong Kong West Kowloon services, the 130 cm item limit and adult 20 kg allowance apply, and there is no checked-baggage service. MTR’s rules are for those high-speed services, not every Chinese train. [2]
- China Railway’s restricted-items list limits a carried lithium battery to 100 Wh, with the stated electric-wheelchair exception. An e-bike battery needs its own assessment; a bag around the bicycle does not solve a battery restriction. [1]
What to do next
- Before buying the train ticket, measure and weigh the packed bike. Include the carton, wheels and pedals that will travel together, then add your ordinary bag to the weight total. A sample box measuring 70 × 40 × 25 cm totals 135 cm, so it exceeds the 130 cm EMU limit even though no single side looks especially large.
- Choose the workable branch early. If you cannot get below the applicable size and weight limits, arrange separate transport or rent after arrival. For an expensive touring bicycle, compare a specialist bike shipper with the cost and practicality of hiring a suitable bike locally. Leave time for collection and packing rather than discovering the problem at security.
- If the packed bike fits, protect the drivetrain, sharp edges and loose parts so they cannot damage people, seats or other luggage. Use a rigid box for a Hong Kong cross-boundary trip. For a mainland-only journey, show your exact packaging and dimensions to the departure station’s railway service desk when resolving a bike-specific acceptance question; the domestic rule’s general size limit still applies.
- Check everything packed with the bicycle. A loose lithium battery, a large repair tool or a pressurised cartridge can create a separate security issue. Read the railway restricted-items list for the particular object; do not assume equipment is admitted simply because a cyclist normally carries it.
- If shipping, agree the receiving address and date with your destination hotel or bike shop before handing over the box. Save photographs, the waybill, delivery contact and declared-value terms. Keep the parts you need to rebuild the bicycle together, and ask whether batteries or tools must travel through a different accepted service.
- If carrying the bicycle, arrive with enough time to speak to staff before the final boarding rush. Keep the package closed in the station and on the train, and put it in an appropriate luggage space without blocking doors or aisles. If it is refused before entry, use your prearranged shipping or rental alternative rather than arguing that a second passenger ticket covers the bike.
If your situation is different
If yours is a small folding bike, the relevant measurement is the finished package, not the manufacturer’s bare folded dimensions. Padding and a carton can take a nominally small bicycle over the limit. Weigh it with that packaging, and make the test before leaving home.
If you are riding a multi-day route on your own full-size bicycle, plan the railway and bike shipment as separate parts of the trip. A domestic train journey does not automatically provide an airline-style oversized sports-equipment counter. Ask the carrier handling the shipment for its collection, battery and receiving requirements.
If you are taking an e-bike, start with the battery’s labelled watt-hour rating and the exact railway rules. A typical large traction battery may fail the carried-battery limit. Removing it does not establish that the remaining powered vehicle is accepted; Hong Kong’s cross-boundary rules also restrict powered wheeled transport itself.
If your journey includes Hong Kong, use the stricter cross-boundary product requirements for that segment. You cannot check an oversized bicycle into the high-speed service at West Kowloon. Arrange a separate shipment or a local bicycle on the other side before choosing this rail connection.
Common mistakes
- Measuring only the bicycle frame. Railway dimensions apply to the item you carry, including packaging and protruding parts.
- Reading 130 cm as the permitted longest side. It is the sum of length, width and height, so a fairly compact-looking box can exceed it.
- Assuming a fabric bag solves every rule. It neither reduces dimensions nor satisfies the Hong Kong service’s explicit hard-packaging requirement.
- Buying another seat for an oversized bicycle. A seat ticket does not change the baggage limits or authorise blocking a passenger seat or aisle.
Quick questions
Can I roll an unpacked bicycle aboard?
Plan on a packed luggage item, not a roll-on bike service. A normal full-size bicycle is better shipped or replaced by a rental for the destination.
Is a folding bike automatically allowed?
No. Measure its packed dimensions and weight and assess accessories and batteries separately.
Does first class give a bigger bike allowance?
The cited carry-on limits are passenger luggage rules, not a first-class sports-equipment upgrade. Do not buy first class to solve an oversized package.
Can I check a bicycle at West Kowloon?
No checked-baggage service is provided on that high-speed product. Make a separate bike transport plan.
