How do I change the date or destination of a China train ticket?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Open the issued ticket and use its change option while seats are available. Ordinary mainland tickets allow one change; changing the destination requires more than 48 hours before departure, while moving to a later travel day close to departure can incur a fee.

您好,我想把这张车票改到这个日期和车次/到站。请确认是否还能改签、差价和手续费,并一起核对同行儿童,谢谢!

Meaning: Please check this ticket's change eligibility, fare difference and fee, including the accompanying children.

At a glance

  • China Railway's rules allow one change, including the date, train, class or destination within the applicable conditions and available capacity. [1]
  • Changing the arrival station requires more than 48 hours before the original departure. Do not treat a last-minute date change as permission to change the destination too. [3]
  • For a change to a later travel day, the published fee bands are 5% of the lower fare at 24–48 hours before departure,15% within 24 hours, and 40% after departure; the postdeparture request must be made before midnight that day. [2]
  • A higher replacement fare requires the difference; a lower fare returns the difference with any applicable deduction. A change fee and fare difference are separate components. [1]
  • The normal booking window is 15 days, so a change can only use a train open for sale and available in the supported flow. [1]

What to do next

  1. Before buying a tightly timed journey, read the ticket's change conditions and note the destination-change deadline. Keep the booking channel, passport details and any connecting tickets together so a later adjustment can be made coherently.
  2. Open the actual issued ticket, confirm the original train and passengers, and select the change or destination-change function as appropriate. If an agency controls the order, use that agency's supported process rather than creating an unrelated second reservation.
  3. Search the new date, exact stations and class. Compare the replacement journey with your hotel and onward plans, then inspect the available seat and any new station access before choosing it.
  4. Review the new fare, fare difference, change fee and any seller charge before confirming. A free change does not mean a more expensive replacement seat has no additional cost.
  5. Complete any required payment and wait for the new issued record. Save its train, date, carriage and seat, and stop using an old screenshot that still shows the cancelled or superseded journey.
  6. Update associated child tickets, meals, pickups and connections. Ask the seller or station about any item that does not move automatically with the ticket, and retain the change reference for later refund questions.

If your situation is different

You want to travel earlier or on the original day: inspect the supported free-change route and seat availability. Compare the actual replacement fare even when no separate change fee applies.

You missed departure: act before midnight on the original travel date. A same-day change and a later-day change have different fee treatment, so inspect the actual options promptly rather than waiting until tomorrow.

You want a different destination within 48 hours: the ordinary destination-change route is outside its stated deadline. Compare cancellation/rebooking or another supported arrangement through the order or staffed ticketing desk.

You already changed the ticket: the ordinary one-change allowance has been used. Read the remaining cancellation or special-disruption options rather than assuming another date change is available.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing free change with no fare difference: inspect both amounts.
  • Changing the destination after its 48-hour deadline: choose a valid alternative route.
  • Waiting until the day after a missed train: use the available same-day process promptly.
  • Moving the adult but forgetting children and meals: review the complete travelling party and related orders.

Quick questions

Can I change the passenger name instead?

A train-ticket change is not a transfer to another person. Use the actual passenger's correct identity and ask the seller how to handle an erroneous booking.

Can I change to a sold-out train?

The change needs available capacity in the supported process. Compare other departures or classes rather than cancelling a usable ticket before securing a viable alternative.

What if the railway cancels the train?

Use its disruption handling rather than assuming voluntary-change fees apply. Keep the cancellation notice with the affected order.

What should I show the ticket counter?

The original booking document, order details and the exact replacement date/stations. Have every affected passenger's information ready so the change is applied correctly.
