I land early but hotel check-in is in the afternoon. What is the best plan?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

If you need a room immediately after an early flight, book the previous night and have the hotel confirm it will hold the room for your morning arrival. Otherwise, arrange luggage storage and a flexible first morning before normal check-in.

您好,我将在27日早上6点左右到达。如果预订26日这一晚,请确认房间会保留到我早上到店,不按未入住取消。谢谢!

Meaning: If I book the previous night, please hold the room until my stated early-morning arrival rather than cancel it as a no-show.

At a glance

  • Trip.com property pages show check-in time and front-desk hours under Property Policies; the two fields answer different arrival questions. [1]
  • The two Shanghai listings checked for this guide show check-in after 14:00 and a 24-hour front desk. A staffed desk is not the same as an available early room. [2] [1]
  • The checked Meibo listing separately identifies luggage storage and a laundry room, illustrating why useful arrival facilities should be checked individually. [3]
  • For a 06:00 arrival on 27 September, the night beginning 26 September is the previous hotel night. Ask the hotel to hold that reservation through the actual morning arrival.

What to do next

  1. Before choosing the room rate, decide whether you need sleep, a shower or only somewhere to leave bags. If immediate room access is essential, request a guaranteed arrangement rather than a note asking for early check-in if possible.
  2. For a guaranteed morning room, ask about booking the previous night or a confirmed early-check-in product. Give the flight and arrival time, and obtain written confirmation that the room will be held and not treated as an unused overnight booking.
  3. If you can wait, confirm luggage storage, the earliest normal check-in time and any available washroom or rest facilities. Save the hotel’s Chinese address and front-desk contact before the flight.
  4. Plan a first morning close to the hotel, with breakfast and a light walk or rest. Keep it flexible enough to shorten after a poor night’s sleep; avoid a prepaid timed visit that depends on everything going smoothly at the airport.
  5. At reception, show the reservation and agreed arrival arrangement. Leave only appropriate bags in the confirmed storage service, retain valuables and essentials, and keep the collection receipt or tag.
  6. Return at the confirmed room time and complete check-in. If the room is available earlier, adjust the morning around that opportunity rather than keeping an unnecessarily busy plan.

If your situation is different

You travel with a baby, older parent or someone who needs rest: value guaranteed room access more highly. Compare the extra room cost with the difficulty of several hours waiting with luggage and a tired group.

The hotel offers early check-in only if available: treat that as a possible bonus and keep the luggage-and-breakfast plan. If uncertainty will cause a real problem, choose the guaranteed previous-night arrangement instead.

You have an overnight connection rather than a city stay: check whether the hotel is airside or landside, whether you can enter, and what room period you are buying. A day-use stay and an ordinary overnight booking may cover different hours.

The flight is delayed: tell the hotel the revised arrival time so it retains the right room arrangement. Keep the written confirmation when staff shifts change.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 24-hour reception as 24-hour check-in access to a room: check the room’s actual availability and booked period.
  • Booking only the arrival date for a dawn arrival and expecting the previous night: align the reservation dates with the time you need to enter the room.
  • Paying for the previous night without telling the hotel: confirm the late/morning arrival and room hold in writing.
  • Scheduling a demanding first morning while waiting: choose nearby, flexible activities until you know how rested you are.

Quick questions

Is luggage storage usually separate from check-in?

Read the property’s listed service and confirm when you can use it. Ask whether there is a charge or storage limit for your bags.

Can I just ask at reception after landing?

You can ask about available rooms, but arrange a guaranteed solution beforehand when immediate access matters.

What should I write to the hotel?

Give the booked nights, actual arrival date and time, and ask it to confirm the room will be held for that arrival.
