How should I spend one day at Hangzhou’s West Lake?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 11 oct 2026

Spend the day on a few connected lake sections: start around Broken Bridge and Bai Causeway, take a proper meal break, then choose another shore or Su Causeway. Skip the full perimeter unless walking itself is your goal, and keep Lingyin as a separate substantial visit.

我们想去断桥、白堤和孤山。请问往哪个方向走?

We want to walk to Broken Bridge, Bai Causeway and Gushan. Which way should we go?

At a glance

  • Hangzhou’s destination page describes the full West Lake perimeter as approximately 15 km. That is a long walk before adding detours, meals and visits. [1]
  • The lake’s named landmarks include Bai Causeway (白堤), Su Causeway (苏堤), Gushan (孤山), Leifeng Pagoda (雷峰塔) and the central islands. [1]
  • The city’s landscape guide connects Broken Bridge, causeways and lake viewpoints; these give a clear route without visiting every named scene. [2]
  • Our planning choice is two lake sections with a meal and a rest between them. A full day is time to enjoy the landscape, rather than an obligation to cover the whole shoreline.

How to do it

  1. Start with Broken Bridge (断桥) and Bai Causeway. Save those Chinese names and Gushan on your map before leaving the hotel. Walk the connected section at your own pace and stop for the views you actually like; you do not need to reach every labelled viewpoint.
  2. Choose a lunch and rest stop before starting another long stretch. If staying around Hubin (湖滨), it can be a useful place to return to between walks. Keep your hotel entrance saved so that a weather change does not turn into an unfamiliar cross-city search.
  3. For the afternoon, choose one different section: Su Causeway for another lake crossing, or the southern shore around Leifeng Pagoda for a change in viewpoint. Select the destination on the map and compare the travel leg before committing to it.
  4. If you want an island boat visit, make it the main afternoon activity instead of adding it to a complete lake circuit. Read the posted operator route, destination and return pier before paying. Choose a service that brings you back to a useful shore for the evening.
  5. Finish near your dinner or hotel area. Leave time to sit by the water rather than insisting on an exact sunset photograph. For a train departure that evening, work backwards from the actual station and keep the final lake segment close to your exit route.

If your situation is different

With only half a day, keep Broken Bridge, Bai Causeway and one meal or café stop. A smaller continuous route is a better introduction than driving between several shores to collect photographs.

For heat, rain or low walking stamina, choose a short shoreline outing followed by an indoor visit or a long meal. Make the second lake section optional. Your enjoyment of the first section is the reason to keep it, not a test of whether you can finish the perimeter.

If Lingyin is the main reason for coming to Hangzhou, secure its reservation first and give it its own half day with transfers. Keep the lake as a shorter walk around the remaining time; do not expect an all-shore circuit plus temple visits to feel relaxed.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the lake as a small urban pond. The published perimeter is about 15 km; choose the segments before you begin and protect time for meals and sitting down.
  • Adding every causeway, island and pagoda because all appear on one map. Pick one afternoon subject and remove another rather than making every stop a brief arrival and departure.
  • Assuming a boat ends at the pier where you started. Read the route and return instructions at the operator’s sales point, and save the arrival pier before boarding.
  • Using a temple reservation as a flexible slot anywhere in the day. Lingyin admission is tied to its booked period; arrange the lake around it, not the other way round.

Quick questions

Should I walk all the way around?

Only if a long walk is what you want. Two selected sections make a better ordinary first day.

Which names should I save?

断桥, 白堤 and 孤山 for the first section; add 苏堤 or 雷峰塔 for your chosen afternoon.

Can I combine West Lake and Lingyin?

Yes with a shorter lake visit and a confirmed temple period. Do not combine both with a full perimeter walk.

Do I need a boat?

No. Choose one if being on the water is your priority; replace part of the walking plan rather than adding it automatically.
