Should I stay by West Lake or Hangzhou East station?
By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 11 oct 2026Choose Hubin on West Lake’s eastern side for a sightseeing stay; choose Hangzhou East station for an overnight dominated by a late arrival or early train. A tea-hill or western-lake stay makes sense when the hotel setting is part of the trip and you protect time to enjoy it.

Please send the entrance address and map pin. Can a car reach reception, and does this room category have a West Lake view?
At a glance
- Hubin (湖滨) is the urban eastern-lake area; the local accommodation guide identifies Longxiangqiao (龙翔桥) on Metro Line 1 as its useful transport anchor. [1]
- Hangzhou East is 杭州东站, a separate railway destination. The guide connects it to Hubin on Line 1; a station hotel and a lakeside hotel serve different parts of the stay. [1]
- Manjuelong (满觉陇), Longjing (龙井) and the western scenic areas are different from the Hubin shopping-and-metro base. Use the exact property pin when comparing them. [1]
- West Lake’s published full perimeter is about 15 km. “West Lake hotel” is therefore too broad to tell you which shore or walk you are booking. [2]
How to do it
- Write down the two moments the hotel should make easy: the evening you want and the next morning’s departure. For two sightseeing nights, a walk back from the lake often matters more than shortening the arrival ride once. For a transit night, the station can be the better choice.
- Search Hubin or Longxiangqiao for a practical first-visit base. Save the actual branch entrance, not just a district pin. Compare the walk to the water with the walk to the station; choose the room and street that support both without a daily car arrangement.
- If choosing Hangzhou East, route from the hotel entrance to the railway departure hall you will use. A “station area” address can still require a walk or car ride with luggage. Ask reception which side of the station the property serves and how to reach the correct entrance.
- For a tea-hill or scenic-lake property, ask about the vehicle drop-off, meal arrangements and late arrival. Put the Lingyin or tea outing on the same side of the stay where possible. Do not fill the day with cross-city commitments that keep you away from the setting you paid for.
- Book the exact room category and suitable cancellation terms. Ask whether its advertised lake view belongs to that room or only to a shared terrace. Keep the Chinese address, reception contact and map pin available offline for your arrival.
If your situation is different
If arriving in the afternoon and leaving after another full day, choose Hubin. Keep your luggage at the hotel while you enjoy the lake, then allow a separate transfer to the departure station. The extra station ride buys a more useful evening.
If arriving late and leaving early, choose the station that is actually on your ticket. Hangzhou East and Hangzhou’s other railway stations are not interchangeable destinations. A hotel beside one does not solve a departure from another.
For a slow couples’ or family stay, choose the tea hills or quieter scenic side if the room and surroundings are the experience. Give that choice a relaxed morning, and confirm luggage handling if the property has steps or a lane approach.
Common mistakes
- Booking any hotel with “West Lake” in its name. Identify the shore and entrance; the name can describe a broad scenic area rather than an easy waterfront walk.
- Choosing an East-station hotel to save one arrival transfer, then taking rides back and forth for every sightseeing day. Choose from the repeated journeys and evenings, not only the first trip.
- Paying for a lake-view category without confirming the room view. Ask for the exact category, floor information if relevant and whether the view is private or shared.
- Moving hotels during a short visit simply to try both areas. One useful base preserves time unless a destination hotel is itself a planned experience.
Quick questions
Which would you choose for a first visit?
Hubin near Longxiangqiao, unless the train timing makes this mainly a transit overnight.
Is a tea-hill hotel a convenient city base?
Choose it for the setting and slower pace, then arrange road transfers around a smaller itinerary.
Should I stay at the station for a morning train?
For a very early departure, often yes. Compare the actual hotel-to-departure-hall route before booking.
What should I ask reception?
Ask for the Chinese entrance address, luggage access, room noise and exact room view. Those details resolve the practical choice.
