Why is my hotel room hot when the air-conditioning control is on cool?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

The likely explanation is that the hotel’s central system is supplying heat or ventilation, even though your room panel lets you select “cool.” Lowering the number cannot create cooling in that situation; ask for a room with working cooling or an independent system, and use a fan as the immediate fallback.

Meaning: The room is set to cool but the air is not cold. Is central cooling available? Please offer a room with working independent cooling or a fan, and test a replacement room before we move.

At a glance

  • A water-based fan-coil unit receives hot or cold water from a separate source. The manufacturer's description explains why a room controller alone cannot produce chilled water when the building is not supplying it. [1]
  • Daikin's two-pipe example uses one heat-exchanger circuit for either cooling or heating; its four-pipe version has separate cooling and heating circuits. The system type changes whether different rooms can demand different modes. [1]
  • The same manual documents both local room controllers and central controllers for connected units. A visible room control therefore does not establish fully independent operation. [1]
  • Some systems do support simultaneous heating and cooling: Daikin explicitly describes this for its VRV heat-recovery design. “Central air conditioning” alone does not identify which capability a hotel has. [2]
  • The manufacturer advises closing doors/windows during active cooling, reducing direct sun with curtains and keeping air inlets/outlets unobstructed. Those help a working system; they do not replace an unavailable cooling supply. [1]

What to do next

  1. Before a spring or autumn booking, ask the actual hotel whether mechanical cooling will be available in the room on your dates. Use that wording rather than asking only whether it has air conditioning. If cool sleeping conditions are important, obtain a written answer before the cancellation deadline.
  2. In the room, select the cooling mode rather than Fan or Heat, set a reasonable target below the displayed room temperature and check whether the vent produces cool air. Close the window and use the hotel's intended room-power arrangement so an open-window or occupancy control is not interrupting normal operation.
  3. If the air stays warm or neutral, ask reception whether the building has changed to heating or stopped its cooling plant. Show the current room temperature and mode. This question distinguishes a building-wide condition from a faulty unit in your room.
  4. If cooling is available elsewhere in the hotel, ask staff to demonstrate it in the replacement room before moving all the bags. A room with an independent unit or a working cooling zone solves a different problem from simply changing to another room on the same heating-only system.
  5. For immediate relief, ask for a portable fan, close sun-facing curtains and switch off heat you do not need. Open a window only when the hotel permits it and the outside conditions make that helpful; do not tamper with a restrictor or electrical panel.
  6. If the hotel cannot provide the confirmed cooling arrangement, ask the manager or booking platform to agree a room change, shortened stay or relocation and its refund terms. Keep the written pre-booking response and the hotel's current explanation together before cancelling a non-refundable booking.

If your situation is different

The entire building is in heating mode: choose a workable cooler room, an independent unit, a fan or a different hotel. Repeatedly reducing the thermostat to its minimum will not change the building's supplied water temperature.

Only your room fails while neighbouring rooms cool: ask maintenance to inspect the unit and its controls, or move to a demonstrably working room. This is a room fault rather than proof of a city-wide seasonal rule.

The room warms mainly in afternoon sun: keep curtains closed before the room heats up and consider a less exposed room. Check actual cooling at the same time rather than assuming the sun is the only cause.

You booked a property advertising independent cooling: show that description and ask staff to identify the actual equipment and operating condition. The word “air conditioning” on a booking page is less specific than a promise of cooling on the travel dates.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a snowflake icon proves cold air is being supplied: check the vent and ask about the building mode.
  • Moving to another room without testing it: demonstrate cooling before moving luggage.
  • Leaving windows open while a working system cools: close them unless using an agreed ventilation fallback.
  • Opening service panels or bypassing controls: let hotel maintenance handle the equipment.

Quick questions

Is there one national date when all hotel cooling stops?

No single national changeover date is established by these sources. The useful answer comes from the actual property's system and current operating mode.

Will setting 16°C make a heating-only system cool?

No. A lower target cannot supply chilled water that is unavailable from the central plant.

Does every centrally controlled hotel have this limitation?

No. Four-pipe and heat-recovery arrangements can have different capabilities; ask for working cooling on your dates.

What should I ask before booking?

“Will mechanical cooling be available in this room on these dates, independently of the building's seasonal heating setting?”
