Can I rely on hotel laundry during a China trip?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Look for a self-service laundry room if you want to wash cheaply during the trip. A listing that only says laundry service may mean paid washing or dry cleaning handled by staff.

您好,请问有客人自助使用的洗衣机和烘干机吗?费用、开放时间和洗衣液怎么安排?我明天离店,请帮我确认衣服能及时烘干,谢谢!

Meaning: Is there a self-service washer and dryer? Please explain the fee, hours and detergent, and whether I can finish before leaving tomorrow.

At a glance

  • The checked Meibo Shanghai listing names Laundry room, Laundry detergent and self-service laundry separately from the general laundry service entry. [1]
  • The checked DoubleTree Shanghai Pudong listing names dry cleaning, ironing and laundry service; those entries alone do not establish a guest-operated washer. [2]
  • Ask about four things before relying on the facility: washer, dryer, access hours and the price or payment method.
  • Place the wash before a two-night stay's final evening so you have time to dry everything before packing.

What to do next

  1. Before booking, open the hotel's amenities and search for Laundry room or self-service laundry. Ask whether guests operate the machines, whether there is a dryer and whether both machines are included in the room price. Save the reply with the booking.
  2. Plan a laundry stop around a longer stay. Keep one complete outfit available while clothes are being washed, and avoid using departure morning for anything that must be dry before you leave.
  3. At the hotel, ask reception for the room location, opening hours, detergent, payment method and machine instructions. If the machine requires a mini-program or mainland number, ask staff to demonstrate a supported way to start it with your account.
  4. Read clothing labels and separate items that cannot use the available cycle. Empty pockets, check that the drum is clear, and photograph the selected controls if you need help understanding the wash or dry setting.
  5. Set a reminder for the displayed completion time and return promptly. Check that thick items are actually dry before packing. Ask where damp clothing may safely be hung rather than putting it over electrical equipment or blocking ventilation.
  6. For staff laundry, count the pieces and obtain an itemised price and return time before handing them over. Keep the receipt and mention anything needing special treatment, particularly if you leave the next morning.

If your situation is different

The listing says laundry service but nothing about machines: ask whether it is charged per item, by weight or by bag. Compare the full price for your load with a nearby service before committing; a shirt-and-trousers quote does not cover an entire suitcase.

There is a washer but no dryer: allow a longer stay and choose clothes that can dry in the available space. Ask about an approved drying area and check whether the room has somewhere suitable before washing everything at once.

You are leaving tomorrow: ask for an explicit latest return time before using staff laundry. Keep tomorrow's travel clothes and essential children's items with you, even if the rest of the load can wait.

Your clothes need delicate or specialist treatment: use the garment instructions to choose the service. A hotel washing machine is useful for everyday travel clothes, but a convenient machine does not make every fabric suitable for a hot cycle.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming laundry service means a free guest laundry: distinguish self-service machines from staff collection and dry cleaning.
  • Washing every outfit simultaneously: retain dry clothes for the evening and next day's departure.
  • Starting too late to dry the load: check the displayed cycle time and leave recovery time for damp items.
  • Handing over clothes without a return deadline: agree the price and collection time before staff take them away.

Quick questions

Should I choose a hotel mainly for laundry?

On a longer trip with light luggage, a confirmed washer and dryer can justify choosing one otherwise suitable hotel over another. Match it to a stay long enough to use them.

Can reception help with Chinese controls?

Ask staff to identify the normal wash, drying cycle and start button before paying. Show garment labels if the choice matters.

Does detergent come with the machine?

Ask separately. The checked Meibo listing names detergent as an amenity, but use your own hotel's answer for the stay you book.

What should I keep out of the load?

Documents, electronics and pocket contents; clothing you need before the cycle finishes; and items whose labels exclude the available treatment.
