Where do I clear immigration when connecting to a domestic flight in China?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Clear mainland entry at the airport where you change from an international or regional arrival to a domestic flight. Ask separately whether your checked bag must be collected there: some airline through-check services handle it for you, while ordinary transfers require collection and recheck.

Meaning: Where do I complete entry for my domestic connection, and must I collect/recheck my bag here or is its through-transfer confirmed?

At a glance

  • CAAC separates international-to-domestic transfers from domestic-to-domestic and international-to-international connections, with border and customs procedures at the international/domestic transfer. [1]
  • Air China describes a specific through-check service from the Americas, Europe or Oceania via Beijing on Air China-operated flights. Eligible passengers authorise customs inspection on the baggage declaration. [2]
  • That Air China service excludes its codeshares operated by other international airlines. The marketing flight number alone does not establish eligibility. [2]
  • An arrival card records arrival information; it does not replace a visa, visa waiver or transit permission. Prepare the appropriate entry basis before travelling. [3]
  • Under 240-hour transit, the immediate origin and onward destination must form a qualifying third-country/region route, and travel must remain within the permitted scope. Adding a domestic connection does not remove those conditions. [4]

What to do next

  1. Before booking, mark the international-to-domestic boundary in your itinerary and check that the first mainland arrival airport and the onward route fit your passport and entry permission. Identify both airport codes and operating airlines rather than relying on the destination city name.
  2. At origin check-in, show every flight and ask two explicit questions: where do I complete mainland entry, and where must I collect my bag? Inspect the printed baggage destination and ask whether the particular transfer has an approved through-baggage procedure.
  3. Keep the passport, required visa or waiver evidence, onward booking and accommodation details accessible in cabin baggage. Complete the arrival information required for your entry and keep any necessary declarations with you, not inside a checked suitcase.
  4. At the first mainland arrival, follow the international-to-domestic transfer instructions and complete the required entry formalities. If directed to baggage reclaim, collect the bag and follow customs and the onward check-in or transfer counter route.
  5. If the airline has confirmed through-baggage service, follow that service's instructions and keep the baggage receipt. Do not skip a required personal immigration or security step simply because the bag has been tagged to the final city.
  6. After the transfer counter or check-in, confirm the domestic boarding pass, terminal, gate and boarding deadline. If the incoming delay makes the connection doubtful, speak to the operating airline while you still have time to use its transfer assistance.

If your situation is different

You hold separate tickets: prepare for an ordinary arrival and a new domestic departure unless the airlines explicitly confirm a different arrangement. A baggage tag or a booking agent's general reassurance should not substitute for the operating carrier's instructions.

You have one through ticket: use the airline's transfer desk, but still distinguish connection protection from baggage processing. One booking can simplify assistance without making every airport process identical.

Your first leg is a codeshare: identify who operates it. Air China's published special baggage service excludes flights operated by other international airlines even if they carry an Air China code.

You are only connecting internationally: follow the international-transit route applicable to that itinerary. Do not copy the domestic-transfer process, and assess entry permission separately if you intend to leave the transit area.

Common mistakes

  • Planning immigration only at the final domestic city: identify the international/domestic boundary.
  • Assuming every through-tagged bag must be collected: ask whether the actual approved through-baggage service applies.
  • Assuming every through-tagged bag will move automatically: obtain the airline's explicit transfer instructions.
  • Confusing an arrival-card confirmation with entry permission: carry the documents that establish the actual entry route.

Quick questions

If I fly overseas–Beijing–Chengdu, where do I enter?

At Beijing before the domestic flight, following the transfer process for that airport and carrier.

Does Hong Kong–mainland–domestic work like a domestic-only trip?

Treat the arrival from Hong Kong as the mainland entry boundary and prepare the applicable entry documents.

Can my bag go straight to the final city?

Some eligible services allow it, including the specified Air China Beijing routes. Ask about your actual operated flights and required authorisation.

What if the bag tag and staff instructions seem inconsistent?

Show the tag at the transfer desk and ask where collection and customs occur before leaving the relevant area.
