Which international trains link China with neighbouring countries?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 17 oct 2026

The main cross-border passenger routes to consider are Kunming–Vientiane in Laos, Nanning–Hanoi in Vietnam and Beijing–Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. Start with those corridors; an old map showing a railway to another country is not enough to book a current passenger service.

我想买___月___日从___到___的国际列车票。请问这趟车正常开行吗?这里可以办理跨境车票吗?

I want an international ticket from ___ to ___ on ___. Is that service operating, and can you issue the cross-border ticket here?

At a glance

  • China Railway’s July 2025 expansion notice describes two daily train pairs between Kunming and Vientiane, with departures using Kunming and Kunming South stations. The newly added pair takes about 10 hours including border formalities. [1]
  • That added Laos service calls at Mohan, Boten, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng among its stops. The notice identifies southbound D86 and northbound D84; use the current booking result for your departure date and station. [1]
  • Seat61’s current Vietnam guide describes daily overnight Nanning–Hanoi trains T8701/T8702, using Gia Lam station in Hanoi. Its 2026 update says southbound online booking is temporarily unavailable and directs buyers to Nanning station. This booking-channel update comes from an independent rail specialist. [2]
  • Seat61’s 2026 Trans-Siberian update reports that a weekly Beijing–Ulaanbaatar service resumed in mid-2025, while the direct China–Russia Trans-Siberian services remain suspended. Use this update rather than the historical timetables lower on that page. [3]
  • Seat61’s 2026 Central Asia update says the international services between China and the Central Asian states remain suspended. Do not build a fixed-date Ürümqi–Almaty trip around its older timetable. [4]

What to do next

  1. Before buying onward hotels, choose a specific border route and establish that it carries passengers on your date. Separate a current ticket or dated operating notice from a freight-train story or a preserved historical timetable. Book the cross-border segment before building a tightly timed chain of domestic trains around it.
  2. For Laos, search the Kunming or Kunming South to Vientiane corridor and any intended intermediate stop such as Luang Prabang. Record which Kunming station the offered train uses. The July 2025 addition serves both Kunming stations, so “Kunming” in a travel article is not enough to choose your hotel transfer.
  3. For Vietnam, plan around the overnight Nanning–Gia Lam corridor. Follow the current seller’s availability; the cited 2026 specialist update directs southbound travellers to buy in person at Nanning station. Give yourself a day in Nanning to handle the international ticket instead of arriving minutes before departure with only a domestic connection booked.
  4. For Mongolia, ask the international-ticket seller for the operating date, direction, train number and issued booking. A weekly service needs more deliberate planning than a daily domestic route. Do not buy a nonrefundable sequence onwards through Russia based only on the fact that the Beijing–Ulaanbaatar leg has resumed.
  5. Prepare the original passport and the entry permission accepted at each actual rail border. Read the destination immigration authority’s page for that port, not only an airport visa-on-arrival or eVisa summary. If you are leaving China visa-free and returning later, assess the return entry separately, including the time remaining under the policy you intend to use.
  6. Save the ticket, local arrival time, station address and first hotel offline. China uses UTC+8; Laos and Vietnam use UTC+7. At a border stop, follow the staff’s instructions for passports, luggage and inspection, and arrange an arrival transfer with enough margin for the international process rather than a domestic-train expectation.

If your situation is different

If Laos is your first international rail trip from China, it is the clearest route in this evidence set: a dated railway expansion notice identifies the stations, frequency and approximate journey duration. Choose it for a Yunnan–Laos itinerary, not as an indirect substitute for a short trip elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

If you want a direct Beijing–Hanoi trip, the Vietnam specialist guide also describes through sleeping cars on selected days, with the daily Nanning service as the more flexible connecting route. Ask the ticket seller whether the through car is operating on your date before choosing the entire two-night journey. Do not assume a daily Nanning departure makes the Beijing through car daily.

If a search shows no online international ticket, distinguish sales-channel limits from a suspended train. The cited Vietnam update is an example: it describes the train running while southbound online sales are unavailable. Use the named station ticket channel for that route, rather than paying a random seller for a domestic ticket that stops before the border.

If your destination is Hong Kong, use the cross-boundary high-speed product and Hong Kong entry rules. It is a separate region of China, not a neighbouring foreign country. Keep that product separate from international tickets to Laos, Vietnam or Mongolia.

If you want Russia, Kazakhstan or another less frequently served border, protect the trip with a current operator-issued booking before relying on the railway. The specialist status evidence is weaker than the Laos railway notice, and the historical route descriptions are explicitly retained for context. Choose another mode when the service you need cannot be sold for your date.

Common mistakes

  • Using a freight route map as a passenger timetable. A railway crossing can carry goods without offering a train a tourist can book.
  • Buying only a domestic ticket to the border and assuming it includes the international leg. Read the destination station on the actual ticket.
  • Going to Hanoi’s central station when the international arrival is Gia Lam. Save the ticketed station’s address and arrange the transfer from that station.
  • Ignoring the one-hour time difference on the Laos or Vietnam side. Use each ticket’s stated local time and confirm it with your pickup provider.
  • Applying an old China–Russia or China–Kazakhstan timetable without reading the current suspension notice at the top. A preserved schedule is not an operating confirmation.

Quick questions

Can I take a train from China to Laos?

Yes, the Kunming–Vientiane corridor has a published international passenger service. Search both Kunming stations and match the station on your issued ticket.

Is there an overnight train to Vietnam?

The cited current specialist guide lists the daily Nanning–Gia Lam service. Its southbound booking update points to Nanning station rather than promising an online purchase.

Can I go directly from Beijing to Moscow?

Do not plan around the old direct trains. The specialist 2026 status note says they remain suspended, even though the Beijing–Ulaanbaatar leg has resumed.

Does a train ticket give me entry permission?

No. Match your passport and visa or visa-free basis to each country and the actual rail border before buying a restrictive fare.
