Can I keep a Chinese number active after leaving China for future SMS codes?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 20 oct 2026

Yes, you can keep an eligible Chinese number after leaving, but it must retain an active way to receive SMS abroad—ordinary roaming or a supported forwarding service. Choose an active low-cost plan for verification codes; a number-holding arrangement is useful only if its terms also allow the messages you need.

离开中国后,我需要用这个号码在___接收验证码。可以用的最低月费套餐是什么?国际漫游、保号和收短信有什么条件?

I need this number to receive verification texts in ___ after leaving China. What is the cheapest eligible active plan, and what roaming or retention conditions apply?

At a glance

  • A documented forwarding option is CMLink UK’s 1-Card-Multi-Number: its current product page advertises £3 per month and is available to CMLink customers. This is a UK service example, not a nationwide Chinese SIM-retention tariff. [1]
  • Its terms allow an existing active China Mobile mainland number (CMCC) or a China Mobile Hong Kong number (CMHK) to be linked. They do not offer the same linking promise for China Unicom or China Telecom numbers. [2]
  • The terms permit one CMCC and one CMHK number per CMLink number, and accept a passport of any nationality for the specified identity authentication. Application still requires the provider’s identity check. [2]
  • For this forwarding product, the linked original number must be switched off for incoming calls or SMS to be forwarded. Switching off that SIM is different from terminating its underlying service. [2]
  • The product renews monthly. Ending the CMLink line ends the linked product; a new number issued through this product is also terminated when its product is cancelled under the stated terms. [2]

What to do next

  1. Before leaving China, list the accounts that actually depend on your Chinese number. Change them to a durable home number or another recovery method where the service permits it. Keep the Chinese line only when the remaining access is worth its ongoing cost; do this while you can still receive verification messages locally.
  2. At the operator’s own shop or account support, ask for the lowest available active plan that can receive SMS in your destination country. Give the exact number and ask for the monthly fee, roaming activation conditions, incoming-SMS charge, minimum balance, and cancellation trigger. Request the plan name and terms in the account. A quoted fee for simply reserving the number does not answer the SMS question.
  3. Arrange either direct roaming or an eligible forwarding product before departure. For direct roaming, have the operator confirm SMS reception in the country you are going to, including any activation or account-age condition. Keep data roaming off if you do not need paid data on that line; the service you are preserving is receipt of messages.
  4. If you are already a CMLink UK customer with an eligible active China Mobile number, compare its £3 monthly forwarding product plus the costs of keeping both underlying accounts eligible. Open the CMLink account area, locate 1-Card-Multi-Number and follow identity verification. Keep the passport information consistent with the registered holder. Do not cancel the mainland number in an attempt to “transfer” it into this linking service.
  5. Put the renewal amount and review date in your calendar, and retain a payment route that works from abroad. Check the first bill after changing the plan. For CMLink, manage the call and text forwarding settings in the account and follow its instruction to switch off the original linked SIM for forwarding.
  6. After arriving abroad, test with the real service whose code you need. Confirm that the message reaches you and that the account accepts the code. If ordinary SMS arrives but one app’s code does not, take that sender and timestamp to the app’s support; if no messages arrive, start with the carrier’s roaming or forwarding status.

If your situation is different

If you have China Unicom, China Telecom or a tourist reseller’s SIM, use that provider’s plan and overseas-SMS conditions. The CMLink linking terms cited here specifically name CMCC and CMHK. A forwarding product for one network is not a way to preserve every Chinese SIM.

If you are outside the UK, compare your own carrier’s direct roaming first. Do not buy the UK example solely because the advertised add-on is £3: it requires an eligible CMLink account and the right receiving service. Ask the provider about operation in your actual destination before paying for two lines.

If you only want the same number for another China visit, number holding may be enough. If you need codes while away, ask expressly whether incoming SMS remains usable during that status. The phrases 停机保号 and 保号 describe keeping a number, but the feature you are buying must include the message delivery you need.

If you will not return and can move your account recovery elsewhere, close the dependency first and then cancel the line through the operator’s procedure. Save evidence that the accounts now use the replacement contact. Do not simply stop paying while important logins still point to that number.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a cheap number-holding fee includes overseas codes. Compare the active messaging feature, the plan fee and roaming or forwarding cost together.
  • Cancelling a mainland number before linking it. The documented CMLink route requires an existing active number, and linking is not the same as cancelling the original subscription.
  • Keeping credit on a line but never testing the required code abroad. Account balance and successful delivery from a particular sender are different checks.
  • Using a fixed “all Chinese SIMs expire after 90 days” rule. Read the cancellation trigger of your own product and set a reminder before that date.

Quick questions

What is the cheapest monthly price?

There is no single price established across the different carriers, provinces and tourist products. Get the lowest eligible active-SMS quote for your existing number. The concrete UK forwarding example is £3 per month in addition to relevant underlying service costs.

Can I receive codes without keeping the Chinese SIM in my phone?

An eligible forwarding product can do that. CMLink’s cited terms require the linked original number to be switched off for forwarding; keep its service active.

Can any passport holder apply for the example product?

Its terms list passports of any nationality for the stated identity check, but you also need an active CMLink account and the eligible linked number.

Should I retain a number just for one unused app?

Usually move the app’s recovery contact to a number you will keep, if the app allows it. Pay for retention when the access you preserve has a clear continuing use.
