Can two travellers share one wallet for transport and separate purchases?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

One person can pay a shared restaurant or shop bill through their own wallet, but arrange each traveller’s transport ticket separately. Keep a second independent way to pay so the group can split up or cope with a lost or flat phone.

您好,我们有两位乘客,想用一次付款购买两张各自使用的单程票。请确认每张票的进出站方法,谢谢!

Meaning: Please sell us two separate passenger tickets, even if one person pays for both.

At a glance

  • A merchant purchase and a person-to-person transfer are different functions; Alipay's foreign-card route does not support personal transfers or red packets. [1]
  • Octopus instructs tourists to use one card per traveller; a card cannot simply be tapped twice for two people entering the same journey. [2]
  • Shanghai offers individual single-journey IC or paper QR tickets, valid on the purchase day, with their own entry and exit handling. [3]
  • China rail tickets use each passenger's identity record. A person who buys tickets for companions still needs to enter the actual travellers' details. [4]

What to do next

  1. Before travel, decide which expenses one person will pay and which need individual access: shared meals, transport, separate outings and emergency purchases. Prepare a second card, cash or another traveller's own wallet for the times the main phone is unavailable.
  2. For a shared merchant bill, have the payer use their own verified account and supported card. Confirm the total and keep the receipt, then settle any private split between companions through a method they actually support.
  3. Before entering public transport, obtain a valid ticket or credential for each person. In Shanghai, the payer can ask the station counter for the required separate single tickets instead of trying to scan one personal code repeatedly.
  4. For Hong Kong transport, give each traveller their own Octopus or other supported ticket. Keep the child's or older traveller's appropriate product separate rather than treating one stored-value balance as a group entry token.
  5. When booking trains, add each actual passenger and the required child declaration. Save the individual ticket and document details where the relevant traveller or responsible adult can use them at the gate.
  6. Agree a simple separation plan: hotel address, meeting point, contact method and money for a return ride or meal. Test that the backup works before leaving one person with every functioning payment method.

If your situation is different

You always travel together: one main payer can keep shared spending simple, but carry a backup for phone battery, account or card problems. Individual transport admission still needs the right ticket for each person.

You sometimes split up: give each person a usable payment route and the information to return independently. Do not leave the second traveller relying on a code screenshot that the transport operator may not accept.

You travel with children: an adult can manage the purchase, but book the correct child ticket or free-child declaration. A child's lack of a phone does not remove the need for the applicable transport record.

You want to share an account login: keep identity and payment accounts with their actual holder and use supported passenger or merchant-payment features. Buying for someone else is different from making their device impersonate your account.

Common mistakes

  • Treating one successful shop payment as proof of group metro entry: arrange individual tickets.
  • Trying to reimburse a companion through an unsupported foreign-card transfer: choose a working settlement route.
  • Putting every card and phone in one bag: keep an independent fallback available.
  • Booking train seats under the payer's identity for everyone: use the actual passenger records.

Quick questions

Can I pay for my partner's dinner?

Pay the legitimate shared merchant bill through your own supported account, then keep the receipt if you divide costs later.

Can I buy two metro tickets with one payment?

Ask the station's supported ticket-selling route for two individual tickets. The payment transaction and the number of passenger admissions are separate.

Does each child need a smartphone?

Use the operator's child-ticket or declaration route and have the responsible adult manage it. Choose physical or paper tickets when that is simpler.

What is the minimum backup?

Keep enough accessible money and contact/address information for a meal and return journey, plus a payment method that does not depend on the same phone and account.
