How should I change my itinerary when rain is forecast?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Keep the trip and move the weather-sensitive activity first. Pair each outdoor priority with a nearby indoor or shorter alternative, then use the actual forecast and operator notice to decide which version to follow.

At a glance

  • Weather describes short-term conditions; climate describes longer-term averages. A seasonal description cannot tell you whether a specific outing will work tomorrow. [1]
  • Mutianyu's current notice board includes dated weather closures and reopenings, as well as section-repair notices. Read the applicable notice, not only the usual opening hours. [2]
  • Shanghai Museum East lists last entry 17:00 and Tuesday closure; People's Square lists last entry 15:00 and Monday closure, with holiday exceptions. [3]
  • A useful backup has four parts: an open venue, any required reservation, an accessible route and a realistic return to the hotel.

What to do next

  1. Before paying for an outdoor-heavy day, choose one nearby alternative you would actually enjoy and keep the most weather-sensitive booking flexible where practical. Put the cancellation deadline beside it so the decision can be made before the useful option expires.
  2. Read the forecast for the actual location and period, then check the named attraction or transport operator for closures. Distinguish unpleasant rain from a warning or closure that changes whether you should make the journey.
  3. For ordinary rain, shorten exposed walks and cluster indoor stops. For a closure or hazardous route, move the affected activity and choose the backup without trying to recover it through an unsupported side entrance or informal transport.
  4. Put the chosen arrangement into the actual day's sequence. Include the hotel entrance, transport terminal, meal and final return, then leave one optional item that can be dropped without losing the reason for the day.
  5. Save the confirmed bookings, Chinese addresses and relevant instructions offline. Keep the cancellation or change deadline beside each paid item so a later adjustment can be made while the useful option is still available.
  6. Review the plan with the people travelling. Agree the priority, the comfortable pace and the point at which you will shorten or change the day; give everyone the practical meeting or return information they may need.

If your situation is different

The rain is light and you enjoy walking: keep a shorter version with suitable footwear, a sheltered break and a clear return. Preserve the atmosphere you wanted while removing the part that becomes uncomfortable.

The activity is a river, mountain or cableway visit: use its current operating notice and follow the restrictions. A city forecast alone does not establish the conditions or operation at the exact river section or mountain route.

You already have a paid ticket: open the seller's change/refund terms and ask about the specific closure or date change. Save the operator notice with the order when it affects the service you purchased.

Common mistakes

  • Cancelling the whole trip because one day is wet: identify the affected experience and move that first.
  • Using a museum as a backup without checking last entry: match the actual branch and date.
  • Treating an old flood video as today's status: use the current location, notice time and named operator.
  • Keeping every original transfer in an indoor plan: reduce exposed journeys as well as changing venues.

Quick questions

Should I decide several days ahead?

Make the bookings flexible early, then update the activity choice as the relevant forecast and operator information become available. Avoid locking a weather decision to a distant forecast when it can remain open.

What if the main landscape is hidden by cloud?

Choose a lower or different experience you value, or move the viewing day within the stay. Keep the trip rewarding without requiring the exact photograph.

Do all attractions close in rain?

Use the specific operator's notice. A normal wet day, a severe-weather warning and a closure are different conditions with different actions.

What should the backup preserve?

Keep the day's purpose where possible: art instead of an exposed architecture walk, a good meal near the hotel, or a shorter neighbourhood visit. A backup should be enjoyable in its own right.
