Can I test Alipay before arriving in China?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Prepare Alipay before departure, but test mainland merchant payment with a small shop purchase after you arrive. At home, you can finish registration, card linking and the identity checks shown in the app.

您好,我想用支付宝买这个。如果外卡付款没有成功,请问可以付人民币现金吗?谢谢!

Meaning: I would like to buy this with Alipay. If the foreign-card payment fails, may I pay in RMB cash?

At a glance

  • Alipay’s visitor setup starts with a mobile number and Add Now for an eligible international credit or debit card. [1]
  • The international-card service covers daily purchases in mainland China and excludes person-to-person transfers and red packets. [1]
  • The official merchant checkout controls are Scan and Pay/Receive. [2]
  • English support is +86 571 2688 6000, daily 08:00–24:00 China time, UTC+08:00. [1]

What to do next

  1. Install Alipay before you leave and register with the number you can keep using during the trip. Finish the SMS step while that number has service. Keep the account signed in and make sure you can unlock the phone without depending on an unfamiliar connection.
  2. Tap Add Now and follow the card prompts. Match the cardholder details to the issuer’s records and confirm that the card appears in the account. Use your own active card rather than borrowing a companion’s details to get past a screen.
  3. Complete any passport or face-check request. Photograph the original document clearly, with its edges and text visible. If the app gives a precise reason for rejection, correct that reason before another attempt; keep the message for support if it repeats.
  4. Check your card in the bank’s app. Confirm it is active and has enough available funds or credit. Find the overseas-payment and security controls, and make sure you can receive the bank’s approval requests from China.
  5. Plan the first purchase. Choose a staffed convenience shop or other ordinary merchant after arrival, and carry enough cash for it. In Alipay, scan the merchant’s business code or show your Pay/Receive code to the cashier; select the intended card and confirm receipt.
  6. Keep a working backup for the airport transfer and first meal. If registration remains blocked before departure, prepare WeChat Pay or physical-card/cash arrangements for those first transactions rather than spending the entire last evening retrying one account.

If your situation is different

A personal transfer fails at home: stop using that transfer as a test. International-card merchant spending and sending money to a person are different functions. You have learned about the attempted transfer, not whether your intended shop checkout is ready.

You see a location message in Hong Kong: prepare a separate Hong Kong payment method and test the mainland purchase route once you reach the mainland. Keep the exact message; do not change the account’s identity details to work around a geographic prompt.

A legitimate mainland booking accepts your payment before departure: record that completed order and the card used. You can rely on that booking confirmation for that purchase. Still keep another method for in-person payments and services you have not yet used.

You cannot receive an SMS: check the country code, active phone service and the number on the account. Contact your mobile provider if messages are blocked. Do not use a temporary number you will lose immediately after registration.

Common mistakes

  • Paying somebody for an account-verification test: use the official app’s own steps and a genuine purchase from a merchant you intend to use.
  • Treating a balance top-up or red packet as the final test: use the supported international-card merchant checkout instead.
  • Leaving all payment preparation until airport Wi-Fi: complete the account and bank steps while you still have time to get help at home.
  • Deleting your only useful SMS line when installing travel data: retain access to the number used by Alipay and your issuer.

Quick questions

Can I prepare without a Chinese phone number?

Yes. Use your overseas number with its correct country code and keep it able to receive account messages.

Should I try several tiny payments in advance?

No. Finish the setup steps, then make one normal mainland purchase. Keep the transaction once it succeeds.

What if one wallet never activates?

Use the wallet that works and plan card or cash alternatives for your first ride, meal and hotel payment.
