How do I know my bank card is linked to Alipay?
By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026Open Alipay’s bank-card list and match the card’s last four digits to the card you added. Then complete any identity checks and use a small shop purchase in mainland China to confirm you can pay.
您好,这是我第一次用这张外卡通过支付宝付款。付款后麻烦您帮我确认是否收到款,谢谢!
Meaning: This is my first Alipay payment with this foreign card. Please confirm receipt after I pay.
At a glance
- Alipay’s published setup is phone-number registration followed by Add Now to attach a bank card. International credit and debit cards are supported. [1]
- The official payment guide lists UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club and Discover; use the actual card options in your account when adding one. [2]
- For a shop purchase, tap Scan for the merchant’s code or Pay/Receive to show your own payment code. [2]
- International-card funding excludes personal transfers and red packets. A transfer to a friend is the wrong setup test. [1]
What to do next
- Open Alipay and find the card list under your account’s bank-card area. Match the last four digits and check the expiry against the card you intend to use. If you recently received a replacement card, compare that replacement rather than the number you remember.
- If the card is absent, use Add Now and enter its details again carefully. Use the name and billing information held by the card issuer. Keep the bank’s own app and the number receiving its security codes available while you complete this step.
- Finish any identity prompt shown by Alipay. Use your own passport and keep the document type, number and name consistent. Treat a successful card addition and a completed identity check as two separate items on your preparation list.
- Before flying, open the bank app and make sure the card is active, has sufficient funds or credit, and permits the payment types you need abroad. Resolve an expired card or a frozen account while you still have easy access to your bank’s support.
- After arrival, make one small purchase at a staffed mainland shop. Choose the intended card on the payment screen, confirm the amount and merchant, then ask the cashier to confirm receipt. Keep the completed transaction in Alipay so you can see which card was used.
- Prepare a second route for the next purchase: another usable card, WeChat Pay or cash. Save the working method and its last four digits in your own notes; do not keep repeatedly testing once the shop payment is complete.
If your situation is different
The card appears but has an action beside it: open that action and read whether it concerns the card, identity or account security. Complete that specific requirement. Adding a second copy of the same card will not resolve a separate passport or issuer challenge.
Several cards are listed: pick the intended funding card before approving the purchase. A successful payment on your backup does not test the first card. This matters when one card has better exchange terms or when you want to keep spending on a particular account.
You are still outside mainland China: finish registration, card addition and requested checks now. Save the merchant-purchase test for arrival. Do not ask a stranger to collect a payment or create a personal transfer merely to make the account look ready.
The first shop payment fails: leave the card in place and read the error. If your bank declined it, handle the bank alert; if the code starts a personal transfer, ask for a merchant checkout. Use the linked payment-failure answer for the recovery sequence.
Common mistakes
- Calling the whole setup finished after seeing the card: also complete the requested checks and confirm one real merchant purchase.
- Checking only the bank’s push notification: match the Alipay transaction with the cashier’s receipt before trying again.
- Deleting a working card while another feature fails: identify the failed function first, especially transfers, red packets and transit mini-programs.
Quick questions
Can I add a debit card?
Yes. Use an eligible international debit card and complete the prompts for that card.
Do I have to load an Alipay balance first?
Start with a merchant purchase funded by the linked card. Do not open balance top-up just to test that purchase route.
What should I record after the test?
Keep the date, amount, merchant and card’s last four digits. That gives you a useful reference if a later purchase fails.
