Is my connection between two Chinese trains realistic?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

Check whether the two trains use the same station before judging the connection time. For an unfamiliar same-station change, allow about an hour; if the stations differ, add the full cross-city journey and another station-entry buffer.

您好,我需要从这趟车换乘下一趟车。这是两张车票。请问换乘通道在哪里,是否需要出站重新安检?谢谢!

Meaning: Here are my two tickets. Where is the transfer route, and must I exit and pass security again?

At a glance

  • 12306 searches show the actual departure and arrival stations, and a city can have several station results. [1]
  • China Railway identifies queues at ticket windows, security, identity checks and boarding gates; these are separate from the train’s running time. [2]
  • The original document used for each real-name ticket is required for the journey. [2]
  • A railway ticket can normally be changed once; after a missed departure, the current ordinary-ticket rules include a same-day change route before 24:00. [3]

What to do next

  1. Before purchasing the connection, compare the complete station names on both legs. Do this even when the booking service displays the same city. A change from a south station to a main station is a new transport leg.
  2. For the same station, inspect whether the booking instructions or station signs provide a transfer route between arriving and departing areas. Plan around the route you can use with your passport and luggage; include help at a manual checkpoint if you need it.
  3. For different stations, calculate the road or metro transfer door to door, including exits, walking, tickets, traffic and entry at the second station. Add time for the second train’s identity and security checks rather than counting only the map’s ride estimate.
  4. Set a workable buffer for your group. Start with about an hour for an unfamiliar same-station transfer, and add time for children, mobility needs, large luggage or counter work. Choose a later connection when missing it would disrupt an expensive or essential onward arrangement.
  5. Make sure both legs are issued and save their details offline. Put the transfer-station instructions between the two tickets in your notes, so you know what to do when the first train arrives.
  6. If the first train is delayed, speak to onboard or station staff before you lose the connection. Show both tickets and ask how to proceed. Follow the recovery arrangement for that journey rather than cancelling a ticket without understanding the available assistance.

If your situation is different

You connect to a Hong Kong cross-boundary train: include the relevant border and station procedures in that journey. Do not apply a simple mainland platform-change estimate to a route involving cross-boundary formalities.

The first leg arrives at a different station from the second: treat it as a cross-city transfer even if the stations are connected by metro. Keep enough time for the walk to the metro, any interchange and the final security queue.

Your second train is the last useful departure: choose an earlier first leg or a larger buffer. Compare the cost of a longer wait with the cost of finding a hotel and rebuilding the following day if you miss it.

A companion needs assistance: arrange the station help through the railway’s supported channel and confirm how the connection will be handled. Keep the two trains’ dates, numbers and passenger details together when requesting that assistance.

Common mistakes

  • Subtracting arrival from departure and calling the remainder free time: first allocate walking, transfer and boarding procedures.
  • Assuming all bookings sold together have the same disruption protection: keep the actual ticket and seller arrangements clear.
  • Planning a cross-station connection from the best possible map estimate: include traffic and a fresh station-entry process.
  • Buying only one leg of a tight connection: secure a usable second leg and know the alternative before relying on the journey.

Quick questions

Is 30 minutes enough at the same station?

For an unfamiliar station, choose more time. A short transfer leaves little room for a platform walk, identity check or delay.

Should I leave the station and re-enter?

Follow the station’s current transfer signs or staff instructions. Use a designated transfer route where it applies to your tickets and documents.

What if I miss the second train?

Go promptly to railway staff with both tickets and the delay information, then arrange the next usable departure.
