Could an airport stop use up my single-entry China visa?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 17 oct 2026

A connection that stays outside mainland immigration entry does not use a visa entry. If you enter using the single-entry visa, that entry is used, so resolve any later return to mainland China before leaving the airport or booking an out-and-back side trip.

您好,我的签证是单次入境,之后还计划再次进入中国内地。请帮我确认这次转机是否需要入境,以及本次实际使用的入境依据,谢谢!

Meaning: Please clarify whether this connection requires entry and which admission basis is used, because I plan another mainland arrival.

At a glance

  • MFA distinguishes visa validity, number of entries and duration of each stay; a valid-until date does not create another entry after a single entry has been used. [1]
  • NIA's 24-hour transit description separates staying in the restricted port area from obtaining permission to enter temporarily. [2]
  • Ordinary 30-day visa-free entry and 240-hour transit are separate possible routes with their own passport, purpose and itinerary conditions. [3] [4]
  • Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao have separate entry arrangements. Include any mainland return as another entry decision in the itinerary. [5]

What to do next

  1. Before booking, draw every mainland entry and exit in order, including airport stops, Hong Kong or Macao visits and the final departure. Mark where you expect to remain airside and where baggage, a hotel or sightseeing would require entry.
  2. Read the visa's number of entries, enter-before validity and permitted duration. Keep those as three separate fields so a long validity period is not mistaken for multiple admission opportunities.
  3. Ask the airline whether the specific connection can remain airside with your bags and onward boarding arrangements. If you must collect luggage or change airports, treat that as a potential entry requirement to resolve in advance.
  4. If you qualify for a separate visa-free route and want to preserve the visa for a later visit, explain the intended route to border staff before admission and ask which basis will be used. Carry the required onward travel and do not assume an arrival-card choice alone settles it.
  5. After entry, inspect and retain the entry record and permitted stay information. Build any later mainland return around the permission actually available, not the assumption made when the original flight was booked.
  6. If the single entry has been used, obtain a valid basis for the next entry before leaving on a side trip. Compare changing the route, applying for the appropriate visa or using an independently qualifying waiver rather than attempting to reuse the spent entry.

If your situation is different

You remain in the restricted transit area: follow the actual transit conditions and onward timetable. A separate sightseeing excursion would change that plan and needs its own admission basis.

You enter for an overnight hotel: identify whether admission is under the visa or an applicable temporary/visa-free permission. Keep the hotel plan subordinate to the entry arrangement you can actually use.

You travel mainland → Hong Kong → mainland: assess the second mainland admission explicitly. A single-entry visa used on the first arrival does not become reusable because the side trip was short.

You have a double- or multiple-entry visa: count the remaining entries and check validity and stay duration for the intended return. Do not rely on the title multiple-entry without inspecting the document's actual dates.

Common mistakes

  • Reading enter-before as the final day of a permitted stay: distinguish validity and duration.
  • Assuming an airport stop always consumes an entry: check whether mainland admission occurs and on what basis.
  • Assuming it never consumes one because the trip is called transit: resolve the actual entry procedure.
  • Leaving for Hong Kong without planning the return basis: check the next mainland entry before the side trip.

Quick questions

Can the airline tell me which entry permission was used?

The airline explains carriage and transfer arrangements; the border entry record establishes the admission actually granted. Ask border staff before entry when preserving a visa matters.

Does a paper arrival card use the visa?

The card records arrival information. The admission process and entry basis are the relevant decision, not merely filling in the form.

Can I return visa-free after using a single-entry visa?

Assess the new trip against the independently applicable waiver conditions. Do not treat the old visa as the permission for that return.

What should I show an officer?

Passport and visa, the full immediate route, confirmed onward travel and the reason you are requesting a particular eligible entry arrangement.
