Can I transfer between Chengdu Tianfu and Shuangliu airports in four hours?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

I would not book a four-hour international-arrival connection between Tianfu and Shuangliu on separate tickets: the airports are about 67 km apart, the road transfer alone takes roughly an hour, and entry, baggage and the next check-in deadline leave little recovery time. It can work with an on-time arrival, a quick exit and a confirmed transfer, but choose at least six hours or the same airport when buying the flights.

At a glance

  • A published on-site transport report gives 67 km between the airports and 48–65 minutes by road in normal conditions. Use roughly an hour as the driving baseline, then add pickup and traffic time. [3]
  • The published fastest Line 19 airport-to-airport train time is about 30 minutes aboard. It uses Shuangliu Airport Terminal 2 East and Tianfu Terminal 1&2; station access, waiting and terminal walking are additional. [3] [1]
  • Sichuan Airlines' current airport table gives domestic check-in closure 30 minutes before departure at Shuangliu,40 minutes at Tianfu's T2 G-island counters and 55 minutes at Tianfu's GTC counters. These are that airline's stated desks, not a universal 45-minute rule. [4]
  • For planning, allow 60–90 minutes after an international landing to get off the aircraft, complete entry, collect bags and leave arrivals; use a larger buffer for queues or document questions. This allowance includes more than the passport inspection itself.
  • Worked four-hour budget:90 minutes to exit arrivals +90 minutes for the complete rail/terminal transfer +40-minute check-in cutoff leaves 20 minutes of slack. A delay or missed train can consume it; six hours is the booking buffer advised here.

What to do next

  1. Before buying, compare TFU and CTU on the tickets. Choose at least a six-hour interval for a self-arranged international-arrival airport change, or choose the same airport. Treat six hours as a practical booking margin and increase it for an inflexible onward flight or substantial assistance needs.
  2. Find the actual operating airline's check-in and bag-drop cutoff. For Sichuan Airlines, the current table distinguishes CTU domestic 30 minutes, TFU T2 G-island 40 minutes and TFU GTC55 minutes. Online check-in does not remove the bag-drop deadline or the need to reach the gate.
  3. Budget the arrival process separately from the transfer. Start with 60–90 minutes for disembarkation, immigration, baggage and customs, then adapt to your documents and the incoming flight. A short passport inspection does not mean you will be outside the airport equally quickly.
  4. For rail, select Line 19 in the correct direction and include both station walks, the waiting time and the destination terminal. The published 30-minute train figure is the fast onboard segment. For a car, use roughly an hour's normal driving plus pickup, current traffic and the walk to your next counter.
  5. On landing, compare the actual time with the protected check-in deadline. With a four-hour connection, an exit from arrivals after 90 minutes already consumes much of the margin. Contact the onward airline promptly if the full remaining journey no longer fits; do not pay an unofficial driver to promise a speeding transfer.
  6. Keep the alternative flight or overnight option ready. For separate tickets, use the onward ticket's actual change/no-show conditions. For an airline-sold connection, ask that airline to handle disruption under the booking rather than independently cancelling a protected segment.

If your situation is different

Both flights are domestic with cabin bags: fewer processing steps can help, but the airport change and next airline's cutoff remain. Choose this only after the actual timeline has a usable margin.

The arrival is international: complete mainland entry and follow the airline's baggage instructions before the landside airport transfer. A through-ticket label does not remove the physical airport change.

The connection is late at night: compare the correct Line 19 direction and service with your likely station-arrival time. If it falls outside rail service, price and time a confirmed road transfer before relying on it.

You need wheelchair assistance or travel with young children: add the actual assistance, loading and terminal-transfer needs. A connection that works for one fast-moving adult is not a suitable default for this group.

Common mistakes

  • Reading Chengdu on both tickets and missing TFU versus CTU: check the airport codes.
  • Budgeting until takeoff rather than check-in closure: use the earlier deadline.
  • Subtracting two stations' first-train times to estimate the ride: they can describe different services.
  • Using the opposite direction's last train: inspect the direction and final destination together.

Quick questions

Is four hours enough?

It can work if the first flight is on time, entry and baggage are quick, and the transfer reaches the correct counter before its cutoff. It is a poor default for separate-ticket international arrivals; book a longer gap.

How far apart are TFU and CTU?

The cited transport report gives about 67 km. Its normal road estimate is 48–65 minutes before pickup and congestion.

Is the metro transfer only 30 minutes?

That is the published fast onboard segment. Budget station access, waiting and the onward terminal walk as well; use 60–90 minutes for the complete transfer in the worked plan.

Do domestic counters always close 45 minutes before takeoff?

No. Sichuan Airlines currently lists 30 minutes at CTU,40 minutes at TFU T2 G-island and 55 minutes at TFU GTC. Use the actual carrier and counter for your flight.
