How can a family of five book a car with enough seats and luggage space?
By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026Five travellers will not fit in an ordinary five-seat taxi: it has room for four passengers plus the driver. On DiDi choose Premier/专车 and look for 六座商务 (six-passenger business vehicle); at Shanghai Hongqiao, the official taxi service also offers seven-seat vehicles carrying six passengers through its service desk.
我们有5位乘客,另有这些行李和设备:____。请确认不折叠乘客需要的座位也能装下,并告知车型、儿童座椅安排和总价。
Meaning: Please confirm space for five passengers and the listed luggage without folding occupied seats, plus the vehicle, child-seat arrangements and total price.
At a glance
- An ordinary five-seat taxi has four passenger seats after counting the driver. For five travellers, use a confirmed larger vehicle or two ordinary taxis; children count in the group.
- DiDi's own product data names 专车·六座商务 and describes Buick GL8 and similar seven-seat business vehicles. Its Premier page also uses 商务型; select that larger category rather than an ordinary Comfort car. [4]
- Hongqiao's 强生爱心/无障碍出租车 service explicitly accepts groups of four or more, large luggage and mobility needs, with seven seats including the driver and capacity for six passengers. [5]
- The Hongqiao service is listed 09:00–22:00 at T1 arrivals Gate 1 and T2 arrivals Gate 4, starting at RMB 19. Request it at the passenger service centre near the taxi pickup point or reserve through 021-96990 at least 24 hours ahead. [5]
- Five people plus five large cases still needs a luggage-fit confirmation with the passenger seats upright. Send the bag count, dimensions and child-seat requirement before paying.
What to do next
- Before booking, choose DiDi 专车 → 六座商务 where offered, a confirmed airport large-taxi service, or two cars. Then send one complete request: five travellers, each child's age, exact luggage count and sizes, mobility equipment, pickup airport and terminal, destination and flight number. Ask for written confirmation that everyone and everything fits with the required seats in use.
- Compare a confirmed people carrier or van with two ordinary cars. Ask the operator to state passenger capacity excluding the driver, the vehicle model or equivalent class, and luggage capacity with all your passengers seated. Reject a plan that depends on folding a seat somebody needs.
- Resolve child restraints and accessibility separately. Request the required child seat by age and size, or confirm that your own can be fitted. For a wheelchair, say whether the passenger can transfer and whether the chair folds; those are different vehicle needs.
- Obtain the full quote, including any flight-delay waiting allowance, parking, tolls, late-night charge and cancellation terms. Compare the total group cost rather than a per-person headline or a small-car price multiplied by an assumed upgrade.
- At pickup, compare the vehicle and available space with the confirmation before loading. If it cannot carry the agreed group, ask the booked operator to provide the agreed replacement or a documented alternative; do not solve missing seats by sharing one.
- For two cars, put a responsible adult and a working contact method in each. Share the same Chinese destination, name a meeting point at the hotel and keep each car's plate and order accessible to the other adult.
If your situation is different
At the airport taxi rank: ask the dispatcher for a seven-seat taxi before joining a standard-car allocation. Hongqiao has the named service and desk above; other airports need their own dispatch arrangement. If none is available, use two taxis rather than waiting for an unconfirmed large-car lane.
You have five adults with checked suitcases: prioritise a confirmed luggage-capable van or two cars. A nominally large people carrier can still have little remaining boot space when the rear row is occupied.
Your fifth traveller is a young child: include that child in the passenger count and arrange the restraint. Do not describe the booking as four passengers in the hope that the child can be added at pickup.
One traveller uses a wheelchair: specify transfer ability, folded measurements and whether a ramp or other equipment is needed. Obtain an operator response for that requirement rather than selecting a generic larger car.
The app cannot confirm the luggage fit: use a prearranged transfer with a written capacity response or split the group. A photo of a similar vehicle is less useful than a confirmed seating-and-baggage layout.
Common mistakes
- Counting the driver's seat as available to the family: compare passenger capacity.
- Leaving out a stroller or wheelchair: include every bulky item in the booking request.
- Assuming an upgrade includes a child seat: have the restraint confirmed separately.
- Splitting into two cars without two usable phones: arrange independent contact and the same destination before departure.
Quick questions
Does a seven-seat vehicle always fit five travellers and five cases?
No. Ask about boot space with the occupied rows upright and give the actual luggage dimensions.
Is two cars an acceptable fallback?
Yes, when each car can carry its assigned travellers and bags and each group has an adult, destination and contact method.
Which DiDi class should I select?
Look for 六座商务 under 专车/Premier, or the 商务型 business vehicle shown for that city. The official description includes seven-seat GL8-type vehicles. Confirm luggage with the seats in use.
What should a written confirmation include?
Passenger count excluding the driver, luggage, restraints or mobility needs, pickup location, total price and waiting/cancellation terms.
