Should I stay near Xi’an’s Bell Tower or Big Wild Goose Pagoda?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 11 oct 2026

Stay near the Bell Tower for a first visit built around old-city walks and food; choose the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area when your evenings centre on the southern sights. Keep one base for a short stay and compare the actual hotel entrance, not just the district name.

请问酒店入口在哪里?最近的地铁出口是哪一个?可以安排安静一点的房间吗?

Where is the hotel entrance, which metro exit is nearest, and could you arrange a quieter room?

At a glance

  • Bell Tower is 钟楼; the first-party Novotel location page places its entrance beside Zhonglou station on Lines 2 and 6. Use this as a location example, not a hotel endorsement. [1]
  • Big Wild Goose Pagoda is 大雁塔; a Homeinns property page identifies Dayanta station on Lines 3 and 4 and the nearby Shaanxi History Museum. [2]
  • The Terracotta Warriors are a separate outing in Lintong. The museum’s public route connects through Fangzhicheng and Huaqingchi, so neither central hotel area removes the final transfer. [3]
  • For two or three nights, one well-placed hotel is our planning choice. Moving between these areas costs packing and check-in time without adding a new destination.

How to do it

  1. Choose the evening you most want to walk home from. If that is the Bell and Drum Tower area and surrounding food streets, start your hotel search around Zhonglou. If it is the pagoda and Datang Everbright City (大唐不夜城), start around Dayanta instead.
  2. Put the exact hotel branch and its entrance on a Chinese map. Compare the walk to the metro and to your evening destination. A listing using “Qujiang” or “Big Wild Goose Pagoda” can cover more ground than the short walk you have in mind.
  3. Compare rooms as well as streets. Ask for a quiet room if you are a light sleeper, and confirm the lift and vehicle drop-off if carrying luggage. A room beside the attractions is useful only if you can rest between sightseeing days.
  4. Read your arrival and departure station names before paying. Use the hotel entrance, the actual station and the museum as three separate route tests. Prefer the property that makes your repeated journeys easy, rather than whichever has the shortest single airport transfer.
  5. Book one base with suitable cancellation terms. Save its Chinese address and ask the hotel how a car reaches reception. Leave the southern or old-city visit as an outing from that base; you do not need another hotel to spend an evening there.

If your situation is different

For a history-heavy first visit with the city wall and Beilin, choose the Bell Tower side and use transport for the southern sights. This is our route judgment: it keeps the ordinary evening close to the places you already want.

For a stay focused on the pagoda, Shaanxi History Museum and southern night walks, choose Dayanta. Secure any museum reservation separately; a nearby room does not give you museum admission or a priority entrance.

For a late arrival followed by a very early train, a station-side overnight may beat either sightseeing area. Decide from the actual train station and departure, then return to a central base only if there are further Xi’an nights.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing by the hotel’s English name alone. Match the branch and map pin; “Bell Tower” and “Big Wild Goose Pagoda” in a title do not measure the walk to your chosen entrance.
  • Splitting a two-night visit between north and south. Keep one base unless the hotel experience itself is the reason for moving; otherwise you lose a useful part of the day.
  • Choosing a room for the Warriors commute alone. That outing happens once, while dinner, resting and evening walks happen repeatedly. Optimise the stay for those repeated moments.

Quick questions

Which area would you choose for two nights?

Bell Tower for an ordinary first visit; Dayanta if your main evening plans are in the south.

Is Dayanta the same place as the Terracotta Warriors?

No. Dayanta is a city base; the Warriors outing uses a separate Lintong route.

Can I visit both areas from one hotel?

Yes as an itinerary choice. Keep one accommodation booking and make the other area a planned outing.

What should I ask before booking?

Ask for the exact entrance, nearest metro exit, room noise and luggage drop-off. Those answers are more useful than the district label.
