Can I use Alipay or WeChat Pay without mobile data at checkout?

By the MyChinaTrip team · checked 26 sept 2026

If your wallet can still display its live payment code, ask the cashier to scan it and confirm the result before trying again. If the code or approval cannot load, restore a connection or use a physical card or cash; do not treat a saved QR screenshot as a completed payment.

您好,我的手机网络暂时有问题。如果可以,请扫描我的实时付款码;请先确认是否收款成功,再决定是否换现金,避免重复付款,谢谢!

Meaning: Please confirm whether this live-code payment succeeded before we switch to cash and risk a duplicate.

At a glance

  • The official payment guide distinguishes Scan, where your phone reads a merchant code, from the payment-code route where the merchant scans your phone. Choose the route the cashier can process. [1]
  • Alipay's foreign-card route supports eligible merchant purchases but not personal transfers or red packets; changing connection does not turn a personal transfer into a supported purchase. [2]
  • On iPhone, Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data shows whether cellular data is enabled for an individual app. A working browser can coexist with an app whose mobile data is off. [3]
  • Shanghai's taxi guidance confirms RMB cash acceptance, providing a concrete fallback when the phone route cannot complete. Ask the actual merchant which physical-card or cash route it supports. [4]

What to do next

  1. Before leaving a reliable connection, open the wallet, finish any required login or verification and test the intended card with a legitimate purchase. Carry a physical card or some RMB so the first network failure does not become the group's only way to pay.
  2. At checkout, establish which payment route the merchant uses. If it has a scanner, open the wallet's live Pay/Receive or payment-code screen and let the cashier process that code if the app provides it.
  3. If the screen needs data, connect through your working mobile line or a trusted available Wi-Fi route. On iPhone, check Settings, Cellular/Mobile Data, the selected data line and the wallet's individual data permission before changing unrelated account settings.
  4. If scanning the merchant's code, wait for the app to load the actual merchant and payment amount before approving. Do not assume a photographed shop QR can complete an online order while the rest of the app is unavailable.
  5. Ask the cashier to inspect receipt once an attempt is made. Match the merchant result with the wallet record when the connection returns; if the cashier received the money, keep that receipt rather than paying again merely to change your screen.
  6. Use the agreed physical-card or cash fallback if the digital attempt has not completed and the merchant confirms payment is still needed. Keep the sequence and receipts if an earlier attempt later posts.

If your situation is different

Other apps work but the wallet does not: check the wallet's own cellular permission, login, verification and displayed error. A general signal indicator does not establish that this app can finish the payment.

The wallet displays a code but the merchant cannot scan it: ask whether its terminal supports that payment route. Use a supported merchant checkout or a fallback, rather than cycling through unrelated personal-transfer screens.

The phone battery is exhausted: use the independent payment method you prepared and retain the receipt. Arrange charging before the next transport or hotel task that requires the phone.

The merchant sees payment but your phone reports an error: record the successful merchant receipt and resolve the wallet display later. This is a reconciliation task, not a reason to create another purchase.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every wallet screen works offline in every account state: use the live supported screen and inspect the result.
  • Presenting an old code screenshot as proof of payment: use the actual transaction and receipt.
  • Repeatedly retrying after an unclear result: have the merchant confirm receipt first.
  • Changing banks before checking an app's data permission: fix the specific connection or account blocker shown.

Quick questions

Can I count on offline wallet payment for the whole trip?

Prepare a working connection and independent fallback. Use a live code if the app provides it, then rely on the merchant's completed-payment result rather than planning around an untested offline state.

Is scanning the merchant code the same as showing my code?

No. The official guide presents them as different routes. The available terminal and what your app can load determine which is usable at that moment.

Will airport Wi-Fi solve every payment failure?

Use a working connection to complete the app flow, but inspect verification, funding and merchant-code problems separately if the transaction still fails.

What if I paid cash and the wallet later completes?

Keep both records, ask the merchant to identify the duplicate and request a refund through the original transaction.
